How do you check for bent valves

I think i may have bent some valves and i want to check. How do i go about doing this?
 
Pull your valve cover. Usually you can tell if they are bent or not by looking at the valvestems. Sometimes the rockers on damaged valves will fall down into the bottom of the head.

You could compression test it too. If you get any 0's, that's your hole.
 
i thought so because when i tried a i/c leak test the air was flowing out the tailpipe. Now i know im right. I took the valve cover off just to kind of look at things and sure enough all 8 of the rockers on the intake side are loose and can easily be removed when the lobe of the cam is not pushing on them. It kind of suprised me at first because i just touched it and it fell off. So now i need new intake valves, anything else i'll be needing to replace these? Where does everyone suggest i get them?

This sux, but at least i know what my problem is. Thanks for the help guys
 
You can get the valves at AutoZone, they're only $15 each, or go with performance Manley stainless or something similar. I'd yank the head and get a junkyard one assuming they let you bring it back if it's bad and/or have yours checked out at the machine shop. When you bent the valves you could have damaged the seats and guides....

Napa, sweet action man. Ill stop there when i get the time. Why would showing them a AAA card give me more off? Would it be expensive to just get new seats and guides cause its like a role of the dice when you get stuff like that a junkyard. The thing that really irritates me is the fact that i just drove the car for the first time last week and it ran good, now its back in it's rightful place in my garage with pieces scattered here and there.

Cam lobes are on the top....look at the valve on the left in the photo. Notice how the lash adjuster is fully extended? That valve is not shut.

Are you planning on replacing the valves yourself? Theres alot of work that goes along with that, cutting seats, replacing guides + seals....

Most of the parts are easily available enough, but just dropping in new valves isn't going to fix the problem in most cases.

If you do plan on doing this yourself I thought I'd throw this out there. The last time I bought valves (from Advance Auto parts) The stems were a bit long, and i ended up shaving them a bit. Dont forget to check your stem heights. I've seen people get away with just lapping the valves with a decent grinding compound, but IMHO I prefer to cut new seats.

Also - I had a machine shop rebuild a head for me a while back and when they replaced the guides, they went straight from standard guides to +8's.... Thanks guys for the cracked guide bosses, and the now totally useless head.

I'm not saying you HAVE to take it to a machine shop, just that if your going to do your head dont overlook the little parts.
