I own a black '97 Talon. I'm not sure if it's an ESI or a TSI. I know that the TSI comes turbocharged, and the ESI doesn't. But on my Talon it looks like the turbo has been removed, it has a large area missing next to the intake. Is there any other way I can find out which model it is? (The car sounds turbocharged due to it's new headers)

Is your cam gear cover on the driver or passenger side of the car? If you have a 420a motor (Chrysler-built) then the cam gear cover will be on the passenger side. That will be the non-turbo motor for the 2g and thus if you have a "header" on it, you have an ESI model.

Is the timing belt on the driver's side of the car or passenger's side of the car?
Is the battery on the driver's or passenger's side of the car?

Tsi

yeah it is on the passenger side. Thanks!

Wouldnt typing in, "ESI engine bay" and "tsi engine bay" in Google Images' show you?

But I guess the prev. owner could have "de-boosted" his engine and you just wanted to know, but Ive seen stranger things on this site.
than that.

Its a 420a, thats why i used to DD one for reliability.

I was just wondering because it looks like something used to sit in the bottom right corner.

Did you actually buy your Talon without knowing if it was a TSi or ESi?

the intake comes off the pass side on the tsi. also on the tsi there is a hole in the the pass side finder over the tire where the stock intercooler pipe comes through. also on the tsi the fuse box is on the pass side the n/t is on the driver side also most of the n/t have drum rear brakes and the tsi's have disk brakes on all four corners.

Yeah I did buy it without knowing, the guy didn't know much about the car and he couldn't drive manual so I was willing to take it off his hands.

I payed $300 for my first DSM.

I didn't even know there were turbo models and when i found out I thought mine was turbo but I didn't even know what a turbo was. I thought the motor was a v4 and all that. It was a 1.8L 92 laser. For awhile I thought I had a Pontiac Laser as well.

Everyone starts out on cars somewhere.
I literally one day was bored in highschool and decided to google search plymouth laser and found out about DSM's and slowly over time learned a bit here and then. Picked up a v6 mustang after time and worked on it a bit (just cold air intake, learned to do regular maintenance) then sold it and got a 350 firebird. Learned a bit on that and then got my talon, still learning but I know a hell of a lot more than I did 2 years ago.

Give the guy a break

everyone here is predominately 4G63 turbo fans, but you have the non-turbo 420A engine. its a good platform to start from. Everyone here wants all the power right out of the box. Me personally, i'm glad i don't have the 4G63. it gives me something to work up to. and i don't mean engine swaps or selling this and getting a GSX (which will be 75% of peoples answers to any question you have) How do i change my oil? "Get a GST" how do i change my headgasket? "get a GSX". i love how helpful some people are. At least with my slow 420A i get cheap insurance for being non turbo front wheel drive, and i can install a turbo kit and be in the same bracket as a GST. the Engines are very different, but a stock 420A with a Hahn Racecraft turbo kit is actually faster than a stock GST so screw you about trading off all the time. i hate that answer, it really does piss me off. and when you do go turbo your insurance still reads non turbo so it's still cheaper.

Just my thoughts. Flame as you will. You always do.

From the HRC website itself
For example, our test prototype is a 98 RS, driven daily by Lori Hahn. This car sports a Stage II TurboSystem and a high flow exhaust, along with 17" wheels and street tires. Other than that, it is completely stock, even the clutch. This street sleeper runs 13.70's @ over 100 MPH is the quarter on street tires! Yet it has been daily driven for over a year, from 100 degree summer days to 25 degree below zero winter madness! True real-world performance, to be sure, and aided by the fact that the RS is about 400 pounds lighter than a GSX!

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T (Auto) 7.4 15.5 (MT June, 94)

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS Turbo 6.7 15.3 (MT Sept, 92)
1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 6.8 15.2
1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 9.0 16.6
1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 6.4 14.9

For the Talon
1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 6.8 15.1
1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 6.7 15.2
1994 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 6.6 14.6
1995 Eagle Talon TSi 6.4 15.1
1997 Eagle Talon ESi 8.3 16.4

yeah but the big difference is that a boosted 420a is going to cost alot more in the long run for less performance.

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS Turbo 6.7 15.3 (MT Sept, 92)

As that MotorTrend test was conducted in 1992, when the car came out, the car they actually tested was a GST, not a GS that had been turbocharged with an aftermarket kit. Also, in 1992, the GS Eclipses came with the NT 4g63, not the 420a.

More interesting proof

I ran 15.3. Could have probably gone a bit faster. You hear anywhere between 14.9 to 15.1.-T
I don't have an auto, but you can at least run 14.7 on a stock 5 speed.
my friend ran a 16.1 with a stock gst auto, i never had mine at the track stock but i run a 15@93 flat with the mods in my profile.
A buddy of mine owns a Spyder GS-T and he ran 15.6@xx MPH (srry forgot his trap speed) stock.
