I've been reading the thread a couple times involving the high oil pressure Holset turbos. Which mainly revolves around getting a large oil return line. Currently I am going to setup a stock mitsu oil pan side and cummins turbo side with a hose connecting it till I can build a nice wide one on a NT Oil Pan. However I'm reading continuous conflicting information due to too much oil pressure.

My current setup is a freshly rebuilt HX35 which has yet to seen oil. A brand new engine with BS Removal done with the blockoff bearings. Brand new oil pump, Oil Filter Housing. -4 Feed Line off the JDM (Evo3 OFH).

Even tho I doubt it will do much good, I plan on running a larger filter than the small filter the car is supposed to run. I've heard rumors and seen this play out on an older 1g, where the oil pressure will drop enough to signal the light on the dash. Not sure if that will make a difference.

Anyway, I'm expecting high oil pressure. Before starting the engine I am going to block the plug on the intake manifold for the PCV Valve, Remove the PCV Valve from the valve cover, run the largest nipples I can to a catch can which will be routed to the Intake Pipe like some people rant on and on that this must be. I know I've never had issues with normal catch cans with filters or any of that, but its w/e. I'm hoping that will provide some good ventilation.

Next, onto my actual question. This has to do with the extreme conflicts of running a restrictor or not. Some say yes, some say no. Is it smart to do so? Should it be done? What size? I am running the -4 oil feed for the holset from STM for a 2g (OFH)

Next question. Should I just be worrying about oil drain size and block everything else out of my mind? What should be my focus? Restrictor? Drain Size? Modifications to lower oil pressure?


This engine will be started up on E85 in a month or so, hopefully less and broken in all throughout winter. No boost will be ran through the engine, atleast nothing excessive. Holsets wastegate flap is being left open until my 2nd oil change which should be around mid February.
 
restrictor is based off of your application, you will need one with a feed from the ofh and deleted balance shafts. as different engines run different oil pressure, find a way to measure oil pressure after your restrictor, there aren't any universal restrictor sizes that work for everyone. im using this piece:

grab a restrictor and drill it out based on the oil pressure readings. i found this cheap gauge to use with it:
1-1/2" Dry Utility Pressure Gauge - Blk.Steel 1/8" Center Back 0-100psi: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific
once you get the restrictor drilled out to the correct size, .075" and work your way up if needed, target pressure 15/60psi-idle/wot. as far as the drain, holset calls for a -12an drain, there aren't any kits so you have to make your own. I have a spare drain setup i didn't end up using, pm me if you are interested, its a weld on -12 setup flanged for a hx35 or hx40.

yeah, no need to second guess yourself, you are all set with that. this is the flange i used:
Turbo Flanges & Gaskets, T6 / S400 Oil Drain Flange, JOD-671405 | RacePartSolutions.com
3/4", should work for your application, although im not sure the oil return you are specifying :hmm: I didn't know evo 3's came with a massive oil return line like that. If it is a hardline, you could always chop off the flange and bridge the gap with some hose, im sure you can find a fitting that will adapt to the hose. I'm interested in this oil return though, any chance you can get some calipers on it and snap a photo? Like I said, thats a large oil return, ive never seen anyone use one before for a holset. Could be a cheap alternative, but as it is evo3, very rare.

Yes, thats my original plan. And IDK really. I picked up this Spyder for 40 bucks with a blown engine. Started to notice things were different from the norm. Had an Evo3 Intake, Larger Turbo, Had this water line from the oil filter housing routed directly into the block. Head comes back as a Mitsubishi RVR Head. Valve Cover was a tanish silver color, said Mitsubishi with the Diamond Star before it.

This is the oil line I pulled off of it, It is a hard line

But yes, my original plan assuming it was large enough was just to get a matching T3 Side, cut an inch or two into it. And mate it with this one with some hose and a few clamps.

But I started to read about turbo's blowing up due to improper oil flow so it got me scared, I cannot afford a turbo. I'm on soo much of a budget I am building my own exhaust instead of buying one.

With that flange, what would I use to mate it up with this?

Yeah that looks like it will work perfect for what you are doing, just some hose and clamps and you are all set. Way to get creative with that, large enough ID to drain properly, and will have a nice curve at the bottom for optimal angle into the pan without any dips. That drain is interesting, the 2g drains that look just like that are .66" ID approximately, while that one looks a little bit larger than .75" ID, pretty much a tenth of an inch difference, which is a big difference when that is the contrast between the turbo smoking or not smoking in some people's cases. I wonder why that is, the oil drain holes on the evoIII and the t25 are the same I think? Why the larger oil drain then? I'm going to PM justin and lure him in here, if anyone can answer this, it would be him.
 
Oil return line looks good so you should be good there. I believe I have a stock 2g return line modified with a new flange to bolt up to the turbo.
From my experience holset turbos like more oil then garrett or Mitsubishi turbos and very easily can be under fed. Check out this link, it talks about what can kill you turbo.

If you ever felt the shaft play of a holset turbo when its completely dry it can scare you. It's the oil that fills the gap between the shaft and bearings. If you under feed that turbo you will not know it right away but probably after a 1000 miles or so but if you put to much oil it will most likely smoke right away. If you plan on feeding it from OFH then #4 line with no restrictor will work just fine if your oil pressure is below 80-90 psi wot fully warmed up. If you oil pressure is no more then 75-80 psi then you could get away with using a #6 line which I use on all the holsets I put on.
I know this may start some controversy as it has in the past but you can listen to who ever you want, in the end you will be the one spending the money and doing the work.

I spoke with few diesel guys that have 5.9L cummins that uses hx35 turbo and they said their oil pressure fully warmed up at idle is 30-50 psi and at wot 80-100 psi. The stock feed line is #6 fed straight from the block.
