High idle?

Hello, i have a 91 gsx with a full built motor and it is running about 10 psi i think, even though when you give it more gas at a high rpm it will shoot up to about 15 psi, i dont know why this is.. i do not have a boost controller on it, it the line is hooked up to my intake manifold. but anyway, i do not know if this is normal, but when ever i start my car up cold, like after it sitting overnight, it runs at about 2k rpms. i was just wondering if this is normal or not. it will eventually go down as the motor warms up, but i just thought that 2,000 rpm was a little bit on the high side for a cold start.

That is completely normal.
Most if not all cars idle higher than normal when they are first started cold.

As for the boost issue, Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge telling you that your run 10psi and go up to 15?
Does it shoot up to 15 psi then drop back down to 10? Or does it just stay at 15 troughout the rpm range?

okay thats what i figured, i have a corrola as my dailey driver and on cold starts its like 1100 to 1500 rpm, so i was just curious. and i am running a glowshift boost gauge, and my stock boost gauge, i have a tee in it. and when it hits 15psi the stock boost says 14psi, but thats as high as that goes to, and it stays that high until i shift, or my rpms cut, i think that is due to having a fuel pump. but i was just wondering if thats becuase i have my vaccum line hooked striaght up to my intake.

The boost spike is not normal. Check for boost leaks.

thats the thing, i do not know if it spiking, because when i push the gas down depending how hard i do, wont that depend on how much and how quickly id make boost? if im full throttle, balls out its 15. I will go through and check for boost leaks, what should i look for?

Most specifically, check your vacuum hose off the intake going to your wastegate.

If you don't have a boost controller, it should not go to 15. Maybe your stock boost solinoid is bad. Double check to see if the lines are right. Maybe you can invest in a boost controller. It would suck to have it spike higher than that. As far as checking for leaks, check all couplers. The throttle body is a very common spot. Your intake mani and even your injectors where they go to head.

Definitely check for boost leaks.
And since you said it's a built motor you really should invest in a boost control. Spend a few here to save a lot later on.

okay thanks everyone, i will gop through and check out and see what i can find. any recomendations on boost controllers? i know i have done some reseach on manual and electronic ones, but i dont really know which i should get. im slowly building my car up, so id like to have all good quality parts on it.

Go with Hallman Pro Boost controller. It's a manual set-up. You won't regret it!

I'm upgrading to aem tru boost but its pricey. If you want a cheaper solution get hallman.

cool thanks! im going to go through and test for leaks, is there a specific way of doing this? and i think im just going to go through and replace all my lines while im at it too. any other helpful hints on hot not to get a 15 psi spike?
