I am running into a problem with starting the car. On start up the car will rev to 4000 rpm and then drop real fast and die. It is very hard to keep the car running without revving very high. I recalibrated my tps and replaces my iac with a working one. I did a boost leak test and my only problem is that i have a little leak on the intake manifold. I cant even set base timing because i cannot get the car to idle. I just placed the cas in the middle. I have a video. For some reason in the video it had almost idled, usually it just dies right away. I am just curious if a leaky intake gasket would make it do this this badly and make it not run at all?

I had a leak dont know how bad yours is and i had idle problems so i had to fix all the leaks, i would fix that leak your refering too, then you know at least thats done and solved. Not much sense in knowing a problem and not fixing it. Starting problems could be a few things fill us more in on the car.

I will be changing the gasket tommorrow. I would just like to know if there is another issue so i could do both the jobs at once. I will get the gasket fixed tommorrow and update.

The car is a 6 bolt block with 2g head. Has 1g throttle body. Brand new fmic and piping. BLT no leaks beside the intake manifold. I was thinking the high revs on start up could have been the leak making it run lean and the idle shooting up.

replaced my intake manifold gasket today. Helped the problem alot, come to find out my injectors dont have orings on the bottom so they are leaking very bad. I will be replacing them and hopefully i will be getting a perfect idle :hellyeah:

I have the same problem with my 95 tsi no leaks all sensors replaced and still idles high 4000 rpm
.would a copper head gasket make it rev high?

My problem ended up being a leaky intake manifold. I would double check to ensure you have no major boost leaks, because that really is the only thing that will cause an idle to be that high.

I assume you mean Intake manifold gasket? Yes, it could be a problem if its not torqued down right or either mating surface is warped. I hardly remember putting my intake mani on but im pretty sure it was composite.
If you truly have no leaks and its idling that high then maf or iac. Those would be my first suspects. But more than likely you DO in fact have a leak. you just havent found it yet.

btw, youve actually looked at your throttle body and the butterfly is closing all the way right?

I believe he is talking about the head gasket and is just a little confused. I dont think they even make a copper intake manifold gaskets. He most deffinetly has a leak, or his throttle body is stuck nearly wide open. :aha:

He probably meant copper spray on the head gasket and this shouldn't affect the idle or at least mine never did.
