High EGT with 2.3

Just installed 2.3 stroker and stage 4 head. just cruising around town not boosting i am between 1200-1350 seems to high, think i am just running rich?

If anything, you might be running lean. Lean causes high EGTs. Do you have a WBO2?

I thought it was the oppsite high egt its from running rich, yes i have a wbo2 what should i look for,at idle?

The leaner the fuel mixture, the more air there is to mix with the fuel, thus generating more heat. If the fuel mixture is rich, then there are still some unburnt fuel that acts to slightly cool the exhaust gas. That's how I have come to understand how it works.

An A/F ratio of 14.7:1 is the ideal stoichiometric mix of air to fuel for complete combustion. I adjust my MAFT during warm-up so that the A/F ratio is closer to 16:1 to help warm everything up faster. Normally cruising around town at >25% throttle my A/F ratio is around 14:1.

Boost leaks, or in this case, vacuum leaks, can cause un-metered air to get into the intake tract. Check for boost leaks and watch your A/F ratio during normal driving and let us know.

High EGTs are usually a symptom of knock. Usually a lean condition will cause knock. When the ECU sees knock it will retard the timing advance. This will shoot hotter exhaust gasses out the exhaust valves, hence higher EGTs. You want to see 14.7 on your WB at idle, but to be really sure you need to log to make sure your fuel trims are at or near 100%. For an initial "safe" tune, you want to run somewhere around 10.5 afr during WOT pulls. Keep an eye out for knock. Later you can tune leaner for more power until you get.

I looked at your mods and didn't see any fuel controllers or tuning equipment under engine management...but it says dsmlink next to your downpipe in bolt-ons. Are you using dsmlink? I *hope* you have some sort of engine management if you're running 680's and a walbro 255 at 20psi!

Get a logger if you don't have one, go do some logs and read the following articles:

Now you've got me more confused. How can you make adjustments in Link w/o a cable? I assumed that if you're running the link that you can make adjustments and log with it...

Anyway, as you accel or decel your AFR will change. But, once you find a throttle point and stick with it (constant speed, no acceleration or deceleration) the it should level out right around 14.7:1. It will bump up and down a little, but it should stay right in that area until you accel or decel.

Now, a NARROWBAND O2 reading will jump between .2v and .8v while cruising with the ECU in closed loop mode.

Oh, and by the way, I had skimmed over what your actual temps were (b/c I tune with celsius and was too lazy to convert the number you typed). According to the VFAQ I posted 1350 is perfectly fine for cruising. Pay more attention to your WBO2 reading to see if you're lean/rich during cruising. Until you can log, just turn the boost down to where you can maintain 10.5:1 during WOT and your EGTs stay below 1650-1700.

True, true. Crappy California gas!!! I just find it safe to recommend 10.5:1 when there's no ability to log knock and they're running high psi. He's certainly safe running a bit leaner.

Hows your timing? Is it timing setup for a 2.0 or 2.3L, it makes a difference.

If your seeing high EGT's, yes i would consider your values HIGH. It could be you have too much timing pulled, i highly doubt the reason for this timing to be pulled is knock. Partial throttle under no boost would be VERY hard to knock, unless he had some very bad gas.

Running rich or lean cruising, say 12:1 or 15:1 wont cause a drastic rise in EGT's like you have, i doubt its your AFR.

It is your tune, take your car to a professional tuner and have it tuned properly before you destroy your newly built engine. I wouldn't wait to get your cable to do a log, considering the fact that your asking questions about what AFR to see at idle, as well as thinking your high EGT's are caused by you running rich, i wouldn't attempt to do tuning yourself, im not trying to offend you at all atleast you caught the high EGT's.
