 Hey everyone, thanks for reading this, I hope one of you can help me... was driving the car earlier today was driving fine, i was getting on it a bit.. drove it for about 2hrs.. had boost set to about 16psi. I noticed right as i was heading home that on WOT the car would hesitate horribly like to the point it just bog's. But i was testing it with just easing the gas and it went fine all the way up to redline with being easy on the gas.. so im really confused.. i checked for boost leaks.. none at all.. maybe a Mass air flow sensor problem? Im gonna check the fuel filter tomorrow, I did take my back seat off and look at my relay where i had my fuel pump re-wired and i did see the ground came undone... would that cause that?

Things i did check>

Plugs
Wires
Boost leak test

Thanks for your help
-Tom

I think I know the problem but I will not be sure until I test it out tomorrow, but I did check my re-wire under my back seats. And the Coil Relay Ground was very very loose.. And that could definitly be the problem I hope!

wasnt the problem... anyone please help.. i did turn the boost down to 8psi, and it went away it seems its only doing it past 12psi .. but i could boost 17psi fine earlier so something just recently either clogged or is faulty.. what do you guys think is causing this? It was backfiring and studdering very bad at about 15psi this morning.. could it be a bad fuel filter or maybe a clogged injector? i do feel it being alittle hesitant to start from a stop to like something isnt getting enough spark..

Fuel cut? Are you still on the stock injectors?
Incorrect gap on spark plugs?
But yea, how old are those plugs/wires?

do another boost leak test...if ur running stock injectors sounds like u might be hitting fuel cut like stated above

why would i hit fuel cut now at 12psi and not before at like 18psi it doesnt make sense its not fuel cut.. getting that aside.. yup i just ordered new plug wires.. NGK ones.. so ill wait and see if that is the problem. If not then i cant really see my plugs being bad there only 3 months old and i checked them they look fine and there gapped .028 like they should be.. is it possible for plugs to go bad that quick? i do run the car pretty hard at times..

my today list is

Check fuel filter
coil pack
boost leak test (AGAIN)
fuel injection cleaner and maybe removing them and testing if they open with a 9volt battery

im sure its an ignition problem tho, almost sure its the plug wires

thanks for the reply guys

not fuel cut, this is a wierd studder not a fuel cut studder, and it backfires very bad and sounds tubular sounding thru the exhaust you can feel it backfiring..

Unfortunitly yes i am still on stock injectors and im probably putting a hellish load job on them to im gonna get them changed out soon tho.. Im lacking alot of stuff right now i need denso 660's and safc2, and a datalogger

Plugs are 3 months old, Wires ???????? 85,000 miles old? no clue they look like the stock mitsu wires LOL

I will let everyone know what fixed my problem
after its resolved :thumb:

I dont think this is fuel cut, i never had this rapid backfire sound before and when it happens the rpm gauge jolts up and then lags its very wierd.. it feels like misfires.. so im willing to bet it has to do with the plugs, wires, or coil pack.. but speaking of boost leaks i did have ALOT of them after i changed to dejontool piping it was not an easy task to get rid of them, i had to order all kinds of extra couplings and etc..

I'm having the same problem right now, and i did a little research and narrowed it down to my spark plug wires. So now i have some NGK wires on the way. Hope this helps a little.

ill keep you informed what fixed my problem :thumb:

I had a very similar problem a few months ago, replaced plugs and wires, took care of it. If you are using the standard copper plugs, BR6ES or BR7ES, remember they don't last as long as plat. ;) so you do need to change em now and then.

We have a winner...*ding ding ding*
Those should be changed every 30k regardless... so yer almost 3x overdue :shhh:
Backfires out the exhaust are from unburnt fuel, so you're running overly rich, probably from poor spark.
I doubt the timing has any play in it, because if the timing was off enough to cause a backfire on it's own, then the car as a whole would really be running like ass if it's off that badly.
Theories theories.

I hope its just the plug wires!!!!!! ill be very happy if thats the case.. and ya way over due to change LOL.. :shhh:

Guys i have the same problem, horrible backfire at WOT, sputters, hesitates and sometimes doesn't even get to full boost from the backfiring. I've eliminated all boost leaks and replaced a leaky bov, now have a crushed 1G from another friends' car which worked fine. I orered a set of NGK wires and some BPR7's. Keep posted of any chanced or fixes. Thanks

Its gotta be something simple. I bet its our plug wires and plugs.. Just keep us posted on your progress :)

I have a similar problem on my 1993 TSi. I can run at part throttle with no issue, but when I go WOT I get a bucking , mis-firing effect. Just got the Talon 3 days ago, so I'm gonna do plugs and wires. Gonna wait until I get a new Oil Cap gasket as I don't wanna leak oil on my brand new wires and screw them up.

Hope it fixes it..

I had, well have that problem too...i'm about the only non turbo member in this thread though..anyways mine did the same sputtering backfiring nonsense, so i changed my plugs, after the new plugs were in the car ran fine for about two weeks, do u think it could still be the wires? just the new plugs could put out enough spark from the old wires? i'm not sure how old the wires are though..thanks

Ok guys i finally fixed my horrible hesitation/backfire problem, A new set of wires and plugs NGK wires and bpr7es plugs. I couldn't beleive it, the car ran horrible, as if it had an incredible boost leak. The wires seem ok but when i took out the plugs they were white and had like sand grains, not literally sand, looked like lean burned carbon deposits. New plugs and wires= new car. Thanks

thats awesome to here! Im sure its just the wires for me.. my plugs are about 2-3 months.. but if the wires dont fix ill get new plugs :)

Glad to hear yours is alive again

Yeah, I had the same problem..

I installed a new Turbo (14B), new wires and bpr7es plugs and the car runs like a raped ape. Pitty I only had the car 5 days and I had to do this, but no big deal, I'm used to work on Turbo cars.

Yup, I hear that.. but atleast its all wirth it after your done.. how is your wheel spin on a 14b? I was thinking of going to a 14b but my buddy has one and he gets so much wheel spin its barely controllable.. I myself run the big 16g td05h mitsu turbo and get barely any wheel spin, but i dont get full spool until about 3300rpm.. altho my 1st gear is useless.. constant spin
