hey,

I have a 1997 Gs-t.. I just bought it, the kid i bought it from said the engine was replaced, he seems like its a very clean and good running engine. I was wondering what are some general maintence for a turbo, ive never owned a turbo, I want this car to be fast, it has a 14b turbo, new alternator, new timing belt, new starter, dejon intake, n1 3'' exhaust, 1g bov recirculated, spark plugs, wires

I know how to some mechanical work... I was just wondering what I can do to make my car faster, and if there are any modifications that are bolt on? or that are easy to install?

Thank you very much for looking!

You should check out the VFaq. It's helped me quite a bit so far with maintenance and mods.

Fuel filter, oil and tranny fluid change and a boost leak test would be good to do first. A boost controller can be a cheap way to gain a few hp.

First, welcome to the site! It sounds like a very solid start for your car. Do you know if the engine is a 6-bolt or a 7-bolt? I would do a compression and boost leak test to start out with, just to get a general sense of the condition of the motor. Then, look here on this site at the upgrade paths, they are very helpful. Right now though I would say that your car appears to be in good shape with maintenance with a new timing belt. I would make sure your balance shaft belts were also replaced though, as if they go out they can take the timing belt with them. As far as mods go, you should look into getting some fuel upgrades and intercooling mods next. What are your goals with the car? Also, there is a great local forum, NewEngDSM.org :: Index, get active on there, NEDSM is a pretty strong club with plenty of people who are willing to help you out.

I want to know if its a 4g63t or a 420a. Your a 2g so I'm wondering if he turbo'ed the 420a or swapped motors and everything else too.

Because I see you profile says you have a 2g non turbo.

EDIT: being stupid I didn't pay attention to notice that he said gst... my bad

No your still right which motor is it a 4g63 or a 420?

The way its typed (GS-T instead of GST) makes me think its a 420 that they installed a 14b

So see your not being a retard! PIMking I give you permission to take your helment off nowROFL.

im not really sure the hp maybe around 300? i just want it to be pretty fast, the body is in a little rough shape... i guess the motor is from some place in canada and it has only 50k miles on the motor, its a 4g63 motor

300 hp :boring: get you a boost gauge, boost controller,16g, AFC, some injectors, and a 190 fuel pump.

P.S. fill out your profile it will make it alot easier for you and us.

i have a boost guage but i dont have a boost controller whats an AFC? how much hp do you think my car has now?...

Hmm, this is interesting. If its a 6 bolt swap from canada it might be a JDM engine, I know a lot of JDM motors end up going through Canada, but to be honest I have no idea how you identify them. Any idea what the name of this place was? If you want 300hp you're going to need a clutch, fuel mods, and intercooling. here is what I recommend:

ACT 2100 clutch and flywheel. At the very least resurface your stock flywheel and make sure that the step height is correct. The correct height for an ACT clutch is I believe .610 inches

Walbro 190lph fuel pump

Some sort of intercooler, for 300hp an upgraded Dejon or Supra sidemount will work and keep your car more low key, but recently a lot of people have been going with Ebay front mounts. Im not a fan of ebay prodcuts, but they seem to work ok.

Real Boost gauge, the stocker only estimates

550-650cc injectors

Apex'i SAFC II or AFC Neo, make sure if you go NEO you have a newer version, apparently the older ones had issues with turbo cars. Both of these are fine for 300hp, but realize that you are limited in injector size if you go piggyback like an AFC. That's because an AFC works by lying to your ECU about how much airflow it is seeing to get the injector trims correct for larger injectors. The problem with this is that the ECU sees significantly less air than there is and jacks up the timing accordingly, which can lead to problems with knock. Paradoxically, the more air you flow with an AFC, the less likely you are to run into issues with timing, as the ECU moves to the highest load timing map after a certain gram/rev level is reached, 2.1 on 2gs. Here is a great writeup on AFC tuning done by a very well known local DSMer http://www.posracing.net/AFCtuning.html. DSMLink would be the next step up for tuning, but honestly for your goals its overkill.

If you are still running the stock 1g manifold, grab a 2g mani and port the colletor a bit, at the same time you can port your stock O2 housing.

Get a downpipe, pretty straight forward, a lot of companies sell them. 2.5 inch is fine, 3 inch would work too, but would contribute more to exhaust noise.

Manual Boost Controller- cheap to buy and easy to make, pretty straightforward

Finally, i would strongly suggest not upping the boost without the proper fuel and tuning mods, it's a bad idea to flow more air than your injectors can handle.

One more thing to consider that isnt necessary is ARP head studs, you shouldn't need them but I'm a fan of overbuilding engine components for a little more cushion when tuning.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope it helps. If you don't understand stuff feel free to ask a question. I'm looking forward to seeing you out at NED this season!

EDIT: In the time it took me to write that I see youve added more info. Definitely fill out your profile. The Dejon FMIC is a good unit, that should work well for your goals.

thanks a lot for taking the time out and posting everything you have! the body is in a little rough shape not too bad.. yeah the motor is a jdm motor from canada my car is running at 13psi right now how much do you think everything will cost? do anyone have any of the parts i might need for sale? or know anywhere.. where there cheap?

Yes this is very very important. When I first got into the DSM scene I ran a 16g with nothing more than a aftermarket boost gauge and tubular manifold and this is what happend.

Wally 190lph $90
you can find a used 2g exhaust manifold for cheap or get a new one or FP manifold for $199
I found 750cc injectors for 200

alright where do i start with fuel upgrades, that are not too expensive and that i could put in myself without taking everything apart

alright... can i just buy like injectors.. put them in.. then put like fuel pump or do i have to put them all in at the same time?? and after i install each one do i have to tune it?

You can just put them in but the car is going to run like garbage.

You have to have some sort of fuel management system SAFC or DSMlink or numerous others but those are the two most often used.

For fuel mods there is an order you need to go in. the ECU works by reading airflow and then pulsing the injectors for a given time based on the air it sees entering the engine. Injector size is programmed into it from the factory as is stock fuel pressure, so it sees x air and calculates injector pulse time based on the knowledge it has that for every millisecond y fuel is delivered. I hope that makes sense so far. So, you can bet that when you change injector size, all of a sudden you'll be running rich because the ECU will be pulsing the injectors based on the assumption they are only 450cc when in fact they may be 550cc, 650cc, etc. In order to combat this the AFC works by lying to the ECU about how much airflow there is in order to get the ECU to pulse the injectors for the right amount of time. Still got you? I hope so. Now, that means that before you get larger injectors, you should get an AFC. If it were up to me, I would go AFC (or any tuning device you settle on using), then fuel pump, then injectors. The order of the 1st two isn't important, so long as they are both there before the injectors. You shouldn't need to tune for a 190lph pump, as it shouldn't be able to overrun your stock fuel pressure regulator so fuel pressure should stay at stock levels. For you specific setup I think that 750cc injectors might be a tad big. The airflow changes required by the AFC to run them would probably give you a fair amount of timing and cause you to knock, and I don't think the 14b can flow enough air to get you onto the higher load maps like I talked about before. I would say go 650cc injectors, although 550cc miiiiight be enough, but like I said before, I believe in overbuilding. Just so you know, many JDM motors came with 550cc injectors, so there's a good chance you already have them. Some people have been able to get away with running 550cc injectors with a stock ECU, some haven't, it's a setup specific thing. Let me know if you don't understand anything I just told you, I'll try to clear it up.

suprisingly i actually got everything that you said haha. How would i be able to tell if there are the 550cc injectors or not?.. and so what are you saying depending on whether i have the 550cc injectors i might or i might not have to change teh injectors and fuel pump but get a fuel management system

I'm afraid this is when I stop being so useful. I don't know how to identify JDM injectors, but I'm sure someone else can help you with that. I also am not all too familiar with the capabilities of 550cc injectors, I think they should be able to reach 300whp, but again I don't want to say they will only to have you toast your engine because you run out of injector. Do some searching on this site, all the info you need is here, I guarantee it. I would, however, definitely recommend getting the 190lph pump and rewiring it, no reason not to have the extra capacity and it is likely that larger injectors would outflow your stock pump.

alright sounds good thank you very much! I have been looking a lot on this website it outs out so much! there are literally threads for EVERYTHING! and everyone is so helpful with everything! its pretty coool

No problem, welcome to the DSM community! Just so you know, New England Dragway in Epping is right in your neck of the woods and a great place to race. There are street nights most Wednesdays and Fridays, and the first Weds of the month is generally when local DSMers meet up there. I strongly suggest you get on newengdsm like I said before, it's a great support network. We've had tons of very helpful local DSMers help us out, whether it be hooking us up with a part or giving us a tow and then garage space near NED to fix our car in when we've broken a part, or walking us through a six bolt engine assembly and install for the first time, or helping us tune... I could go on and on. It's a great club.
