help with check engine light

hey guys i have a 95 gst with a 6 bolt engine, and everytime i drive it after around 30 miles the CEL comes on and the car starts running rough, i can unhook the battery and it resets the light and i can go another 30-40 miles then the same thing happens CEL and runs rough. i tried the key on key off test to retrieve any codes it might have, but the check engine light just stays on it doesnt blink for any codes or anything. does anyone know where i should start on this thing. im afraid if i take it to the shop to have the codes read it might not come up with anything. and i will be out cash, so please any help will be aprecciated. thanks alot guys

go to autozone or advanced auto parts. they can read your CEL for free. Start from there.

Ya i would start at one of those two places. They usually don't tell you exactly what is wrong with your car, but it should put you in the general area of what is causing it to throw lights

Those places won't have an OBDI scanner. Those places only care the OBDII scanner. You will not be able to get your codes read if you are inquiring about your 95 GST.

Yes the 95 model will not work with the 96 and later OBD II protocol. I will add that the codes that everyone looks for to "fix" their car are nothing but emissions codes. I am an ASE accredited tech and the amount of people who can fix a car if they only had a scanner. It often take lots of other detective work with other types of diagnostic stuff to fix stuff. By the way, I scan my friends cars for beer. Have to say it works well. If you own a lap top, invest in evoscan.That will show you what is going on. It's like $ 80 for the cable and the download. Tres....

so for us 95 guys how would we go about some sort of tuning setup or datalogger that was for a "2g" would we have to buy one for a 1g since our cars arent OBDII

yeah guys i took it to the autozone earlier, and they wouldnt touch it they said all they could read is 96 up so i guess i will have to take it to a shop and pay to have it read or figure something else out. how would i go about using the evo scan? i dont have a labtop but i have access to one, could you use a handheld pda to check the codes? and also where could i find the cables and program for it? and exactly waht all can be done with the evo scan can any tuning be done with the evo scan?? thanks for the help guys

Take it back there tomorrow, call him a tool, and tell him to do his job and scan your damn car. It works. That's why they are not mechanics. ALL 95's have the OBD-II port and use the OBD-II scanner. ANY parts store with that tool can scan it. They tell you that because in general it does not work on 95 and under. So yeah, roll back there tomorrow to the SAME PLACE so that retard can learn something that day. It works. Bottom line.

Who told you it didn't work? The "newbs"? The autozone tried telling me that, I replied "No man, it works. Just DO IT." He scanned it, and he learned something that day... the customer is always right

the obd2 hook up is to the botom right of the steeringwheel, under the dash right in the corner, kinda where your right knee would be.

My 1995 Talon TSI AWD had a OBDII, but I didn't think all did. I read it was not a requirement to have OBDII till 1996, so I assumed that it was not in all 95's. Well I guess you learn something everyday . Take your shit back to AZ and tell them to scan it.

It was not a requirement until 1996 so I think it is a fair assumption to think that pre 96's would not have them. However, the 95 eclipse/talon's for some reason did. If he does not own a 1995 then why would it be common knowledge.

Your first problem is that you went to Autozone. I'm not trying to trash talk them, but it seems like none of their employees know what they're doing. and their parts never last very long. I prefer Checker/o'reilly. they know what they're doing, and they have quality parts.

Also, some 95's have OBDII and some don't. and they aren't always in the same spot. i worked on one the other day that had OBDII, but it was behind the glove box, and i've even seen them in the trunk. I'm guessing that it depends on which plant your car was manufactured at.

I work for schuck's/O'reilly and let me just say you would be lucky if one or two people out of a a store actually have real world knowledge, its hard to believe that they hire so many people without experience.

But once you find people that you can trust stick with em, and yes mitsu did go OBDII with the 2g's just tell em its a 96 and they would never be the wiser

As mentioned, 95's are OBDII compliant. There should be a sticker on your hood that states that. The emissions tech at an emissions testing station in Wisconsin swore to me that if it wasn't a 96 or later, than it wasn't OBDII. And if my car really had OBDII, well... then it couldn't be a 95, now could it? Whatever.

Since you have a 6-bolt swapped 95, have you done everything necessary for the 6-bolt swap procedure? Do you have an MDP sensor still hooked up in your IM? Is the CAS wired and installed correctly? Both of those will put the car into limp mode if the ECU detects them to be off.
