Hey Guys, My build is now complete!! but I have hit a bump trying to get it to start and cannot figure it out. I need help diagnosing why my car will not turn over. The starter just "CLICKS"

At first i thought the starter was bad so I replaced it. But I soon realized that the new unit is doing the same thing as the old starter did. I have a made a quick video of what the car is doing. I am manually connecting power to the starter with the yellow wire

thanks ahead of time,

Drew

I found this VVVV
You’ll need to put on your 2nd gen starter bracket, but before you do this you’ll have to modify it. The bolt hole on the bottom will not line-up and you’ll have to grind a hole up and towards the front of the engine. Also the transfercase (AWD) will need more room to fit on. You’ll need to trim where that bottom bolt was, trim it almost back to the original hole and you’ll need to pull the metal out that’s above and to the back of the engine. You’ll see this all when you try to put on the transfercase and it won’t fit on. No worries though, it’s not that hard to grind and fit it when it is on the car.
I have a 2g starter plate. Could the starter be making contact with the plate? or hitting the flywheel?

sounds like the contacts on the starter could be bad or the solenoid is getting stuck. if it's the solenoid you can

a. somehow manage to hit it with a hammer(ya right, no room)
b. hit it with the biggest wrench that will fit and bang on it for like 1 minute.

i used to get mine started with a 12mm wrench :rocks: LOL but

TIME FOR A NEW STARTER :thumb:

O was it the 12mm? I thaught it was the 17mmROFL

If he got a used starter wouldnt that help at all. Unless he can test the starter. But my guess it could be bad.

LOL.. 12mm has the magic power you need to get her started :D 17mm is just over kill LOL
but ya, a used starter is useless and a waste of time, might as well spend like $150 to get a new one or however much they cost these days.

Oh almost forgot the #1 rule
clean your battery terminals 1st then try starting it again. You might be surprised :D

I would try hitting it with a hammer, if my old starter wasn't doing the exact same thing as my new starter. I feel it is making contact somehow with something. Even if I am manually jumping it. Could my starter relay cause it not to crank?

did you clean the terminals on your battery and starter cables then try?

the terminals on my battery are brand new. And i have a Brand new Odyssey battery. All ground are good.

But I did not clean the terminals on my starter.

I have everything hooked up that I can think of.

Motor grounded
Trans grounded
Engine fuse is good.
Brand new Odessey battery ( grounded to the Frame in the trunk)

Am I missing anything?

Could my stater relay stop me from turning the car over, even tho I am manually jumping it?

I have a 6bolt swap
2g tranny
2g starter plate
2g stater
Map 6bolt flywheel

If you jump it, it should turn over. I've had this problem with 2 of my previous cars. I just made a push start button.

Grab a long wire and direct it to the positive terminal on the battery to the
single wire behind the starter for the key switch.

isnt that what i am doing in my video?

Hasha yeah pretty much,

Sorry i didn't PM you back man, i been busy.. Well; on my buddys car it was doing that, Do you have the ground from the negative terminal to the starter?

Like the ground wire that should be mated between a starter bolt and the transmission??

If it's not the ground between the starter bolt and trans, You need to check your relay under the dash on the passenger side. That could be blown.

Is your starter plate in between the trans and motor??

If all this doesn't work, i found that unplugging the clutch switch under the dash makes the starter crank, idk why but i tried this on two cars, and it normally works.

well, it sounds like the starter is not receiving enough power to turn the motor over then. You can try jumping it and seeing if that will work.

clutch safety switch. disconnect it.

Why should that matter at this point ?? if i am manually giving power to the starter. I am bypassing the key, clutch and stater relay by doing this?

If i am wrong please correct me.

is your motor seized up? try hand turning the motor on the crank and let me know.
if its not seized then please don't rule out what we have all been telling you.

* Check your Battery
* Try Jumping it.
* activate your clutch switch/neutral safety switch
* make sure your grounds are solid
* check your starter relay(or replace)
----------------------------------------------------
if all of that is fine and in working order consider maybe taking your starter to be tested at a parts store if it passes and this has happened to me, it passes but the starter is bad, just replace your starter.

okay i will try this.

One thing i would like to rule out. From experience from everyone have no start issues does the starter in my video sound as tho it is hitting the flywheel or does it sound like it does not have enough power to turn the car?

Sounds like a bad solenoid. Like stated, try jumping the positive and negative on the stater to by-pass it and see what happens. I used a screw driver most of the time. Just stick it down there and give it a wiggle. ROFL

This honestly does sound like bad battery problems but you said it was new. Watch the starter gear when trying to get it to crank, does it push out towards the flywheel?

after talking with someone else about this. I realized i do not have a ground going from the fire wall to the stater/tranny bolts.

I also have a cheap autozone stater.

I am going to run this other ground wire and replace my starter relay on Monday.

Does anyone have a part number for a stater relay from autozone or napa ect ect? thanks Drew

I have a brand new odyssey PC680 battery relocated to the trunk.

don't waste your money on a solenoid trust me its not worth it. for the price of a solenoid you might as well be better off having a new starter.

P.S
glad you found the problem :)
