Help on 95 GSX

Hello guys, I'm actually a previous DSM owner who was once a member (had a 95 n/t) and I recently (today) stumbled upon a GSX I couldn't pass up. You all were more than helpful before, so I hope that you guys could give me a hand with this.

After doing an extensive search I think that I found the solution to the main problem with the vehicle. The owner said it needed an alternator but there were a few dash lights illuminated as well, and I'm assuming this is what several posters have referred to as the 'trifecta' of lights that often turn on when the alt is bad. However the posters all seemed to have 1g's so I was wondering if one of you could confirm if this holds true in 2g's.

Additionally, though I have done a search on this I couldn't really get good info from a personal perspective, but I was just wondering how reliable the AWD system/ turbo engine is (ie how common would you say crankwalk is, etc) from some of your perspectives (ie people you know w/them/personal experience) because I didn't really keep up with these when I had the n/t.

And one final question if you all would be so kind, oddly enough my brother just got a GST in the past week (I know I can't believe the odds of this either - he had actually been looking for one and I just happened to find this GSX) but it has a problem of not shifting into overdrive (automatic transmission and it is also a 95) are there any common electrical issues that may be present that could save him from a rebuild?

Definitely a sign of the alternator going. It may not be the voltage regulator like mine, but in general something wrong with the alternator.

Hey!

I had the same problem of not shifting into overdrive... Did you check your fluid levels? What'll happen on mine is that my transmission fluid would slowly go down, and I could smell burning tranny fluid sometimes when I drive hard. So, I just added more fluid and then I figured it might help if I added a transmission fluid cooler. So far, it's been working, and the fluid loss is soemwhat minimal.

For me, I would say that crankwalk is not a problem everyone should be worrying about. Sure it actually happens, but I would say it only happens to 10% of the users here. Check the level of play on the pully that is at the crank. And also, most problems that have affected 1G's do in fact affect the 2G's in most cases.

the 3 lights are deffinetly from the alternator failure. I have a volt gauge and I noticed I have the same problem... The 3 lights come on as the volt gets too low or to high... not every time, but usually. My voltage is sometimes as high as 15v.... need to change the alternator brushes and the voltage regulator i guess..

Man you guys are awesome, thanks for the quick replies dalatinromeo, SPYD3R, Fos, xSojooxShotzx, and RedTurboEclipse! I'll keep you all posted on how things turn out w/my alt and with my bro's tranny. And if anyone else has anything to add it'd be much appreciated.

Not to sound redundant but the crankwalk issue isn't that big. I have a 7bolt with about 180,000m on it. Besides my mechanic at the dealership said all the 7bolts didn't come out bad. They just had a bad run on them cranks and bearings and thats what causes it.

Thanks, I actually heard when searching prior posts that 2g's manufatured prior to mid-95 were less likely to have crankwalk probs, is this true or more of hearsay (mine was manufact. in may of 95)
