Help!! Grinding while in reverse

The problem Im having is, my transmission was missing the reverse idler gear shaft bolt. So I had a Fwd tranny handy and took it from that transmission and tried to put it in my AWD transmission. It seems as if it should work but for some reason or another it isnt. Anyone have any prior experience with this??? And should I try and get another bolt from the dealership?? It would go in and the threads matched, but it wouldnt get tight. Its not grinding while shifting into reverse, but the tranny is making a grinding noise while in moving in reverse.

I always thought that fwd and awd werent interchangeable. I would just go to a dealership or junkyard and find the bolt that you need.

Agreed but does the tranny grind when going into gear or does it grind when its in gear. If it grinds when going into gear that is usually a sign of bad syncronizers.

I wouldnt think that the synchronizers would get messed up from just swapping that. I'd say your best bet is to probably just order a new one for an AWD tranny. Or as the others have said, look for one in a junk yard. Theres no sense in messing up an entire transmission because of one thing. Try that and let us know.

I found the part number for the reverse idle shaft, and I checked with the dealership and the awd and the fwd uses the same shaft and bolt. I didnt check as far as the gear goes, bc I plan on using the same gear thats in there now. But the car makes the noise while moving in reverse, and so far ive had a hard time if ever getting it into fifth gear. But its hard to call right now bc Ive hardly driven it. And its been sitting for years, the previous owner had it sitting then I had it sitting for a while too. Then the shop that pulled the tranny before I got it was shit for brains. So I bought the car all in pieces pretty much, so Im just trying to get it right.
