First post but I'll be doing a lot of hanging out here.

96 Talon TSI (I just bought it not two days ago).

Stock Turbo (although previous owner had a bigger one on, and then put it back to stock)

Car has full exhaust
bigger fuel pump
heavy duty clutch

A got onto the freeway, in second gear, I was gassing it pretty hard, in higher RPMS when the car sounded like it hit rev limiter (or blew the turbo). Got off the freeway, and barely could make it home. Car was blowing smoke couldnt tell what color becuase it was dark.

Car starts everytime, but when you drive it, you cant push down on the gas peddle more then an 1/8 of an inch with out it lossing almost all of its power, pretty much cant go faster then 20 mph, shift to second, same thing, almost like when the boost starts to spool up it wants to fall on its face.

Checked oil (looks fine, just changed it earlier that day).
Temp on the car was fine even after the car blew what ever it did.

oh and the oil return line on the turbo is leaking a little too, I tightened down but plan to replace the gasket.

I'm guessing its the Turbo, but need help to make sure,

How do I test the turbo to see if its shot

Should I start the car up, and see what color smoke is coming out.

Should I just get a t-28 16g turbo, what brand and where

I'm guessing I should get a better boost guage, and manuel adjuster right?

Thanks for your help.

Check for boost leaks. I had a problem similar to that... It turned out that I had blown one of the intercooler pipes off.

Generally, how do i check for boost leaks, spray soapy water to all of the connections?

Is there some type of tool to check it with?

you can make one from a pvc pipe cap, hose coupling, some hose clamps, and a valve stem.

if you want to go all out and make a bitchen one, you can also add some hose and fittings, a pipe, and an inline pressure guage.

what i did was drill a hole in the center of the cap and popped in the valve stem, then take off the compressor intake pipe and fit the cap over the turbo inlet. hook up an air compressor or bike pump. watch the boost guage, listen for any leaks.

I poured over a bunch of post, and it does sound like a disconnected a pipe, or boost leak, i l check it out, thanks for the help guys

Jesse

fixed it, intercooler hose popped off, previous owner had very cheap clamps holding the turbo system together.
