I was running my car on 2 cylinders and it cost me a Cat converter...

After replacing the cat conveter, and having my coils checked out and looked at, I said enough was enough and decided to take my car to the dealership.

When taking my car to the dealership, the dealer informed me that my injectors were bad on my car. I live 35 miles away from the dealer so I sucked it up and said fine, replace them.

2 days past and the dealer does replace them and I do get my car back. only one problem though... I still have a mis-fire.

The mechanic shows me my old injectors and readst hem across a ohm reader and shows me both my injectors jumping around between 3.2 and 3.9 ohms. Ok, I was convinced, so I questined why I still had the mis-fire.

The dealer stated my ignition module went out and needs to be replaced. They highly encouraged me to replace my ECU also because they claimed the ignition module will take out a ECU when it goes out, 90% of the time.

I said I was not going to pay 1300 for replacing that. So I drove the car home, 35 miles on 2 cylinders.

2 weeks past and here I am at home with a borrowed ohm reader that my friend uses at work. I'm testing my TPS and I decided to test my old injectors just for the heck of it.

WHAT?! 2.8 constant?

That's right, I'm reading 2.8 now, sure I was able to get 3.3 to 3.8 to off the chart if I wiggle my hand around. But when I had a steady touch on the injector, it read a nice clean 2.8!

I called the dealer and they are spose to get back to me tomorrow since they are closing in 10 minutes. But what can I do tomorrow?

Is there any way they can sucker me out of this?

What shuold I prepare for?

Please advise me before tomorrow!

I would tell them they mis diagnosed the condition, They should take back the 2 injectors and You should get refunded for everything.

Then you should get a new power transister and put it in yourself.
Ohming out injectors tells you nothing and any good technician would know this. The proper way to check them is with a scope. If he can show you waveforms that indicate the injectors are not working, That is a different story.
A lab scope is the easiest way to diagnose a missfire, You think the Mistsu techs would have one in with the rest of their factory enhanced equipment.

At any rate,Which 2 cylinders are missing? The were probably right about the ignition control module, Or "power transistor" on our cars. That will drop 2 cylinders, But you should be losing spark, Not fuel, It will not tell the coil to fire.

All right, so here is the deal. I work for a national auto repair facility (leave unnamed for now) and I'm pretty sure everyone else will pretty much have to follow the same guidelines. As mentioned above, they misdiagnosed the problem. If it were at my shop there would be 2 options. 1. you get a full refund because what they recommended (and you had them do) did not fix it. 2. they fix it for FREE. You may have to talk to someone up in the company but I will almost guarantee you that they will give you your money back. But if you want them to fix it than just tell them that if something else was wrong they should have let you know. After they replaced the injectors the technician should (and probably did) take it for a test drive. I'm sure he noticed, but "forgot or failed" to mention it still had a problem. I say fight it to the end for a refund (in full), or fixed for free (if you go this route I would probably let them have what you have paid so far). I'm about 99pct. sure they will do one or the other. Good luck! And being nice when you're there (at first anyway) will do wonders for them working with you. Do not let them off the hook though. I'm sure they have some kind of "fixed right policy". You might want to check online if they do, then they can't dispute something in writing.

I would take your car to a DSM shop instead of the dealership.. It sounds like they have ZERO clue to what is going on. If you brought your car to my shop you would be driving home happy already. Running on 2 cylinders can only be a couple of things and most dsm shops have spare coils, PTUs, and CAS's so I would try looking around.

I did drive it home and replaced the power transistor, it fixed my problem. No ECU needed.

I'm waiting to talk to them in the morning about my situation, and I hope to get this fixed.

Since I fixed it myself.... could this cause a problem when talking to them? I wasn't going to pay 200 dollars plus labor for the transistor....

Also, this all happend on the 10th of this month, I looked back on the receipt to make sure. This has been nearly 3 weeks ago, is there a factor of time that they could call into hand? I fear they may call me out on this because of time and the fact that they are electronic parts and I've had 1K miles on the car since then.

It's my daily driver....

I would never take a car that has a turbo to a dealership, even if I bought it from there. I bought an SRT 4 in 03. A year later I needed it inspected, and as some of you probably know the SRT doesn't have mufflers on it. The person inspecting the car called the dealership and their response was they would NEVER sell a car without mufflers on it. This is the same dealership that sold me the car, and I would have to take to in order to have any warranty work done. I don't trust dealerships at all when it comes to these types of cars. Especially when the car is almost 20 years old. I'm sure they don't teach about these cars when they go for training.

also you get the asshole techs at the dealerships taking "test drives" seen many times techs abusing fast cars that they were working on, also know a few people who have worked at dealerships that have done it. with the way our motors are I'd take it to a respectable shop.

UPDATE!!!

So I took the car by the dealer today and they looked at my injectors, sure enough when the mechanic hooked the injectors up to the conector wires and then tested them. They jumped back and forth around 3.8.

I said..... Hold up, let me go grab my tester.... I tested it without any conector wires and 2.7 constant, without any problems. The manager sugested testing with the inejctor hooked up to the conector wire... sure enough it jumped around 3.8......

The mechanic said that's normal for a conector wire to have resistance.....

I asked the mechanic to scope the inejctors out and they have asked me to come back later in the day.

The manager and the mechanic explained to me that the injectors were off the scale when they warmed up and when fuel pressure is added to them...... and they suggested that bench testing the inejctors doesn't mean that they are good or bad.

so is it possible that they will jump up out of spec when heated?

What should i look out for when the mechanic hooks the injectors up and scopes them out? What signs should i look for? What's a scope spose to look like?

Please advise!!! Thanks so much.

ugh i cant advise you much on the injectors, but i can tell you to stay away from stealerships. a lot of the times the "techs" are clowns and have no clue what is going on with the car. not only that, but then they screw you for labor and parts.

as mentioned earlier, try to find a private shop that has experience with these cars. i would NEVER go to a dealership unless the problem was covered under a warranty.

You fixed it with a power transistor. Take the old one and show them that one causes it to run bad and a new one makes it run properly. Measuring the resistance of an injector's coil will not tell you anything else about it but if the coil is blown or not. A flow test with a specific duty cycle is the best way to know if they are good or not.

Aditionally your SUPPOSED to zero out the multi meter by touching any leads your using together and pushing the zero button on the damn thing. They are trying to screw you. When you go back take the stupid ass service rep and worthless tech out there and show them the car running like garbage with their new injectors. Then in the parking lot swap your injectors and the good ptu in and then show them how GOOD the car runs. At this point you should demand your money back and ask for some cash to cover your wasted gas and time.

The injectors are dead issue. If the power transistor fixed the problem, Than it was that and not the injectors. I am guessing that you have your old injectors in the car now right? And it is running good? That is all they need to see.

Sow them the old power transistor , And the car running on 2 cylinders, Then swap out the new one and let the see it running on 4 cylinders like ramsack said.
Just hold your ground. Tell them you will park the car in front of the main entrance until they refund you, Or you can drive it through the showroom to get the point across...:D
