hey can any one tell me if an awd starter will work on a fwd car with an awd flywheel. The car is a 97 gst and the engine was all back together a couple days ago and the starter would not engauge to crank the flywheel and I found out that I have an awd flywheel in my fwd car so instead of dropping the tranny (which I tryied but cant get the axel out of the hub its rusted in there bad) or pulling the motor again I was woundering if i could just swap an awd starter so the teeth would reach the flywheel is this possible please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Well buy one and take it back if it doesn't fit.

Course it won't matter if your AWD flywheel is not going to work properly with your FWD pressure plate and clutch disc (or did you change them too?).

Well on a 1g the starter and flywheel are exactly the same on a FWD and a AWD car. I have a FWD starter on my AWD so I can vouch for that. By the way troysevo16 I misread your other post, I thought you had a 1g. It seems to me that it would be the same way on a 2g because not alot changed as far as the engine and tranny layout goes, you sure your starter isn't bad? Maybe it not the fact that the starter is not engaging your flywheel but its your starter not even kicking out when it turns.

a 1g fwd flywheel and awd flywheel are NOT the same...dont spread false information

Im just talking from my experience. On my '92 AWD Laser and my '91 GST FWD they were exactly the same, no difference at all not even in weight according to my bathroom scale. No difference in the ammount of teeth or anything. Im not the only one to have come to this conclusion, Ill have to look through my old posts but way back before I pulled my old engine out I thought it was a 1g 7 bolt by the oil pan. So I thought I was going to need an AWD 6 bolt flywheel to use on the new 6 bolt. Well I made a post about how I needed a 1g 6bolt flywheel and a guy made a post responding to me about how the FWD and AWD flywheels are the same and he knows because he had both and they were the same. Well I didn't really believe this until I got my old engine out and the first thing I noticed is that it was a 6 bolt (By the way the oil pan method apparently dousn't always work) And once I had the flywheel off of it I took them both and examined them, no difference in size weight ect. ect. Believe me I looked for a difference but there wasn't one. Also there was no difference in the starters either. As a matter of fact I have a FWD starter in my car right now because of the fact that it was in better shape than mine. Ill try to find the post I am refering to.

sorry to say but there is a difference, awd is a bit thicker, and fwd is larger diameter..i have a 90 gst and they look the same but they are not....look closer....maybe one of your cars had the wrong flywheel in it before you took it out...but they are different..this is fact

**Edit** i remember measuring them when i had mine side by side....this was about 6 months ago so my memory isnt so great but i think the fwd was 11.5" dia. and the awd was 10" dia

Yes, you are right. There is quite a difference. BUt anyway, i think the starters are different, but an awd one will work with a fwd. Try it, it's only a few minute job on the 1gs

Thats true devilsperm, It may have had the wrong flywheel, because there was no difference at all in thickness or diameter.
