so im 99% sure my head gasket is startin to go on me. at 242km with mostly stock parts. and pretty sure timing belt is over 100km on it....sooo, looking at doing a major head rebuild (not full block just yet though. that's coming in a year) and looking to eventually turbo so planning for the future. just looking for input and any other ideas.

so going to the wreckers to pull a head off a talon there to rebuild so mine is more of a swap so done in less time.

gonna get the head cleaned, decked and possibly port and polished
pull PT cruiser rocker arms, lifters and lash adjusters from wreckers
jeep 60mm throttle body modification too
Crower stage 2 cams
full timing assembly rebuild with UDP kit and new waterpump
adjustable cam gears
valve springs....need suggestions here (beehive ones or what?)
replace oil pan gasket and add a crank scraper
probably add a few guages while im at it (wideband, oil pressure and prob EGT)
also going to wrap my headers
and add a breather to the valve cover instead of hose to intake
ARP head studs
new head gasket

lookin for some input and looking to go to the wreckers in a couple weeks to get my stuff from there.

EDIT

i should probably add that I have a budget of about 2g and I am not in a serious hurry so don't mind waiting for good deals. but will take suggestions as well.

Good list. Go with Crane springs/retainers. I've heard of bad things with Crower springs. I liked the Cranes I had. Never had a problem. I would also replace the water/oil pump and all the timing components while in there.

If you didn't live in Canada, I have a head all ported and polished that I'd sell you for cheap, but shipping up there is pricey.

um. i get my stuff shipped just to the US side then go pick it up. im only about 30min from a border crossing. send me a PM with details. and ya. i didn't label each specific thing. but with the full timing assembly im doing the pump and all other components.

im also looking for the best places to buy these things. Being canadian im not familiar with US shops and will be ordering most of the parts out of the US. looking for the places with the best prices and will be shipping them to wellesely Island, NY

and also for springs. do i need to add spacers so that all have the same pressure or is this overkill?

also. ive done a lot of reading on here for camshafts....i recall BC had a good name for the 420a, but have also read that DKS2s are good, and also delta....kinda not too sure which ones to go with because a lot of the posts on this subject deal with turbo'd cars. i plan to eventually turbo it, but prob not for a couple years.

Im with krackit, im interested in site suggestions besides cimotorsports, dsmgraveyard for head components at a reasonable price. I'm really interested on the pt valves, i've looked around (maybe not hard enough) but can't find a retailer that sells them. Any suggestions...

i have found a few places that sell them. looking at like 250 for both lifters and rockers from what i have been able to find so far.

so i have my big list put together now....just a matter of ordering everything...

purchased:

port and polished head with valves
AEM Tru Time adjustable cam gears
greddy racing timing belt
oil pump
water pump
mechanical timing belt tensioner w/ idler pulleys
exhaust header wrap
full engine gasket set

still to order (locating best prices for still):

Crower Stage 2 cams (CRO-64462-2)
Springs w/ titanium retainers (still deciding on crower and crane springs...need help here)
ARP head studs (AP-141-4202)
Oil catch can
Crank Scraper (from crankscraper.com)
UDP kit (AF/X from howell automotive)
rocker arms from 2.7L (4792295AB)
lash adjusters from 2.4L PT (P5007440)
valve cover breather
greddy 3" cat-back exhaust

junk yard:

jeep 4.0L inline 6 - 60mm throttle body
talon throttle body to do the 60mm mod to
PT Cruiser rocker arms and lash adjusters if I can find a totalled PT with low miles on it

there really arent a whole lot more places besides ci graveyard and howell. i have heard alot of complaints about ci's shipping but i always get my parts in a week and a half. bone head performance has some stuff but only so many people make performance parts for the 420a...

there's more. they are out there....but takes a lot of looking.

So christmas either came very early or is a little late. Either way I am very happy as I went to New York to pick up my first orders.

Had some issues at the US border though. Apparantly they don't like 2 door cars coming over the border with the back seats taken out. Warrants a drug search. haha.

Anyways, here's my first shipment.

- p&p'd head and manifold with plenum spacer (thanks to member david-b)
- AEM tru-time adjustable cam gears (courtesy of member seattleshawn)
-fiberglass header wrap
-full engine gasket set
-new oil pump
-new water pump
-idler pulleys
-gates racing timing belt
-crank scraper

Will be ordering the rest of my parts here within the month.

In the next week or so I am going to be ordering:

Crower stage 2 cams
Crower springs with titanium retainers
ARP head studs
Oil Catch Can
2.7L PT rockers
PT cruiser lifters

Will probably being doing a trip to the wreckers either this weekend or the one after to get the jeep TB and whatever else looks good to me. haha.

im planning to build the head, i have most of the parts, but im not sure to get, the 2.7L PT rockers and PT cruiser lifters... will this parts help with the stage2 cams. are this parts better than the 420A's??

Yes they are better than stock. I am going with the 2.7L rockers and Cruiser lifters. go to 2GNT.com - home and he has a write-up on there explaining how they are better. Basically they can move more oil around.

I've got 30 links in my favorites for parts.

Just throwing this out there for future ref. the 4g63 valve springs will fit the 420a! I'm not 100% on the retainers(but I would imagine they would) but I know for a fact the 4g63 springs do work.:thumb:

I'm guesing you posted this because I must have a link to them for Race Engineering. While the springs do work, the retainers won't. Like I said, I just posted up the links.

But Race engineering is a really great site that has many items avalable for the 420a.

thanks bullet.

I am actually buying the crower cams and springs with ti retainers from race engineering. seems like a good price for the package.

EDIT

so i just called howell automotive to order the AF/X UDP kit and he said they aren't available anymore. Does anyone know of other UDPs that can be ordered? preferably not one that costs 500$.

nice list! glad at least one person rebuilding currently is doing it right LOL..

may i recommend the mechanical tensioner? i use it, love it. nice build tho!

as for Howel: never order nething from them, they ship years later..

UDP: ebay brand works just fine.. this is isnt a "precision" part, it is to some degree, but, you wont find to many differences between brands.. i see them on ebay for ~ 100 USD.

i cant even find a UDP for the 420a on ebay...found the OBX one for the 4g643 or the neon 420a, but not for the talon.

more goodies!

oil catch can, valve lapping compound kit and precut 20% window tint.

ordering my crower cams, crower springs with ti retainers and arp studs from race eng this week.
