Has anyone else had this problem... when I try to put my head on the head is binding up on the head studs and wont just slide on. I have a 6 bolt block and I know if you try to put a 7 bolt head on a 6 bolt block you have to have it drilled. Well here is the thing, I got a new head and when I went to buy exhaust studs for it, I realized the two outer ones were bigger (meaning 7 bolt head). Well I was bummed because I know how the intake on the 7 bolt head is so much smaller, so I checked to see how much smaller, and the head is the same size as my 6 bolt intake manifold. Also my 6 bolt thermostat housing fits the head just fine. So I checked each stud hole and my 12mm arp stud will fit through each hole, some are pretty snug, but it will fit all the way through. So I'm guessing the head is actually a 6 bolt head with the two bigger exhaust studs on the end like a 7 bolt ?!?! My machine shop guy say the binding is normal and that you may have to use a bit of force to get the head on, but I just wanted to ask you guys because I wanna make sure my hg seals perfect! Also are there any other ways to tell between 6 and 7 bolt heads besides exhaust studs, thermo housing and head bolt holes?

The head you have is a 1G 7-bolt head... The two center head stud holes need to be opened up in order to clear the 12mm head studs... Just like a 2G head, the 1G 7-bolt heads also used 11mm head bolts from the factory. Good news is that the center stud holes are the only two that need to be drilled... All other stud holes will fit the 12mm studs just fine.

Seeing if the studs fit one at a time is not the same as trying to slide the head down when they are all in place. The tight ones might be making it not slide down since they are stationary while in the block and there is only one way for the head to go on. With them out of the block you can move the stud around to get it to slide in.

My head dropped right on with the arp studs. It sounds like you have a 7bolt head. IIRC 7 bolt heads have only certain holes that need to be drilled.
