i was talking to my friends dad and he is a mechanic and he mentioned to me that some cars with what they think is a blown headgasket sometimes is just the bolts that hold the headgasket down aren't torqued down tight enough and i was going to check and see how tight mine were but i need to know how tight they need to be... anyone know? of course you can see that i have a 96 rs 420a motor.

well, to "tighten the head gasket bolts" you have to tighten the head bolts. In order to do that, you have to remove the cams in order to get to the bolts, which means you have to replace the timing belt, which means you got a lot more work than just turning 8 bolts.

If you plan on doing this here are the specs.

20lbs for the short bolts + 1/4 Turn
48lbs for the long bolts + 1/4 Turn
