It's about heat. The holset is loaded for longer periods of time. A 16g is run hard for a minute or 2 at the longest, while the holset has to be in a truck towing for hours, heck when I drove to cali as a team we were hauling 40k lbs for 2.5 days straight. And once again no water cooling on the turbo. Oh and btw, the turbo went out at 500k miles running 30+ psi

From my opinions

Blocked off water line ( better for engine and head gasket cus the hot water won't be push back through there )

and with the coolant line of course it's good for the turbo but it's gonna be bad for motor

so i prefer to keep my motor safe than the turbo because turbo is cheaper

Good call op I ran my 16g for two years no coolant lines, the motor went before the turbo 30,000 miles (yeah I drive alot)

Coolant lines are really only for heat soak after hot shutdown. Ball bearing turbos need coolant because they receive about 20% of the oil that a journal bearing turbo does.

The HX35 isn't the best example because it's primarily a diesel turbo, and up until the VGT turbos took over the diesel world I don't believe there were any water-cooled turbos on production diesel trucks. Diesel turbos generally operate at cooler temps, and most large diesel owners are more apt to allow a cooldown period after hard operation.

There is a HX35G/40G used on natural gas compressor applications which features water cooling.

The concept here is the compressor engines are run very hard under load at a fixed RPM for long periods of time in a static location- perhaps even inside an enclosed area. No periods of idle before shutdown and no cool air moving around the engine, and of course natural gas will yield much higher EGT's than diesel regardless, so coolant is used to keep cartridge temps in check on these engines so that oil coking does not lead to a premature failure.

It really has to do with target EGT's (fuel type), bearing design on the turbo, and cooldown period more than anything else. TD05H/TD06 turbos have come from the factory both with and without coolant ports for years the same as Holset HX's and even some Garrett T3's.

From what justin said just get a turbo timer and have the coolant lines blocked off or just idle the car for a while after a hard run.
