Ive met 2 or 3 other DSM'ers who have had the same weird problem with the right passenger fender. I bought it like this and it was pulled out when I bought it but now it stays in. The door is too close to the fender and it just pushes it in. Know of anyway I could fix this without dropping $900 at a bodyshop to do it?

I constantly have this prob, seen some other 1gs around that look like that, too! My reason for buying a pry bar.

My 1G driver's side "Viper Vented" in that manner after my father tried to open the door via brute force after a winter ice-storm back in '93 (he drove it commuting to work when I went off to college).

I've been able to pull it actually "out" a little past OEM alignment of the fender and door panels, so that it will offer clearance to allow the door to open and close normally.

Nowhere near perfect, but definitely saved me more than a few pennies.

hmmmm.... I never realized this was common. This also happened to my buddy's 1G Talon. It happened to him on the first day he bought it. We pulled it back out and tried to straighten it as best as we could. Then we adjusted the fender so that the door just missed it when it opened.

yeah that shit sucked, i remember the first time it happened was the day i bought the car. we were on our way back to michigan from NJ and paul (above poster) tried getting out and it smashed in. i always carried a pair of pliers and an allen wrench with me to pull it out. it would be good for like 3 months then randomly #### up again.

Yeah, mine will be fine for a couple months, then f up again. It sucked, the first time it happened all i had to pull it out with was a butter knife...

Mine had a bit of damage from that when I took it into the dealership for the t-case recall, and when they ####ed it up a LOT worse, I got free body work out of it :thumb:

No more worries now.

Do you guys notice any commonalities with the people posting?? No one with eclipes or lasers are posting with this problem. It seems to be a problem with just the 2gb eagle talons. I Personally think that it is caused by the expansion and contraction of the large door panel trim piece that came on the talons. It goes half way up the door! I've noticed that they get "wavy" when exposed to heat and cold, and have been warped and weathered over the years. Could they be catching the fender as the door opens???

My door does the SAME THING!! I hate it so much. If the door get opened more then half way i have to fix it with a carpet tool LOL! . I was wondering if anyone elses door seems to be lower in the back. Like in one of my pictues you can see the door seem so be lower in the back and doesnt follow the line. Also, as you can see I have moved the fender out and it still does it???? Another thing i have noticed at least on mine is that the gap between the door and the fender is pretty wide compared to the drivers side(doesnt catch). Anyone else notice some of these things, or have found a way to fix it somehow????Dont make fun of my bondo LOL.

because the tailights and the black roof wasn't enough to set us apart from the eclipse, we now have this wonderful passenger door problem. 1gb Talons are da best! :thumb:

Im guessing that either your fender is to far back or your door is sagging and bringing it out of alignment. Either way the solution isnt that complicated if you know how to fix em.

Sorry, guys - I should have cleared up earlier up top (dang Profile doesn't let you list more than one car, even if both are DSMs).

:coy:

My 1Gb is a '92 Eclipse GS DOHC 2L, with the factory/OEM side-skirts and spoiler.

My GSX has had fender clearance issues. I simply loosened all the bolts, shimmed the fender/door contact area with a piece of wood and tightened all the bolts back down. Rubbing issues solved.

As to the wavy effect, I've never noticed that. It wouldn't surprise me though.

Well I'll be damned. I bought my car with the fender messed up like that. Junkyard fix $25, but my whole car is still primer. :shhh:

So that fixed it? Just a new fender? I think I could manage that one haha.

I dont think the fender is to far back, but i know that the door is sagging. What would need to be done to fix it? That would be awesome to fix. :rocks:

Pretty much, just gotta look out after anybody getting in the passenger seat, I make it known to be easy while opening it. ;)
But the only advantage is that all I have to do it primer it back up, and not pay somebody a lot of $$$ to paint it to match. That is the key. :thumb:

I tell people but they never listen, even if i tell them everytime they are about to open the door.

so possibly just realligning the door could solve the problem?

3 ways to solve this, if one doesnt work, try another.

1. loosen up your door hinge bolts and try to re-align the door so you dont have that problem

2. loosen all the bolts on the fender, pull out slightly where the door meets it and make sure you tighten the bolt you see inside the door jam there really well.

3. (this one always works for me when i fix cars with this problem) loosen fender bolts, push/pull the fender front (towards the front of the car) slightly, retighten it down

used all 3 of these in the past. the cars are 10 years old or more, things are slowly starting to sag and move around

I wish I would've considered asking on here earlier because now, almost a year later and being abused by the door pushing it in, it looks like shit and is all torn up now :(

Alright I will try to loosen up the screws and whatnot. It'd be a HUGE help if someone took some pics and showed me which ones to looses/tighten in order to adjust the placement of the door.

Ya same here, but my guess would just be the top and the bottom hinges. Then align the door and tighten them. I'm gonna go try that now and see if it works and ill report back haha.
