Has anyone bought a head from these guys?

Ported and polished head

I'm not sure if it's a good port job or not. I'm thinking that buying a prepped head would be cheaper than to build mine up, so I want to do some research on what's out there before I put any money into it.

If anyone has a good seller for already ported and polished heads w/ valves, guides, and seals (already assembled) I would be very greatful.

Thnx in advance.

From the looks of it it looks like a pretty basic port job, there is still some time in doing the work though. There are basic rules for porting heads that these guys would defiantly know.

I really don't see how they could have messed it up. The intake port looks like they basically just cleaned it up, that is all you would really need anyways since it matches the intake manifold stock. The work around the seats looks good. They didn't show what they did on the exhaust side, Hopefully they didn't hog this thing out to the gasket size.

I would see if it comes with the springs and valves installed. It would be worth it if everything was ready to drop in and save you some time.

Call there number and ask what they did on the exhaust side.

I would steer clear from anyone who uses this picture to represent their work:

That resurface job looks like complete ass.
I'd go with a reputable DSM shop to do this kind of work.
Good luck.

That resurface job looks like ass because there was no resurface job done. It was only cleaned up. I would shy away from this head mainly because from the pic I cannot see the port job that was done. Porting is not just hogging out and polishing, it is a practiced labor. I would suggest that you take your own head and have it done by one of the many companies on our site. Porting heads is specific to each vehicle. A port on a 4g63 is not going to be the same as the port on a 5.0. It requires practice and testing to get each one to flow properly. Those that have the experience are the ones to go with.

And just as an aside; am I missing something here? It says it is good for up to 93 engine, does the 94 engine change? I own a 94 AWD and a 97 RS but I thought the 94 was the same as the 93? Hmm.

They seem to know what they are doing by the looks of it. I would call and ask them what the flow #'s are before and after the port job.

And for those who want to knock the surface, learn a little about it first. Apparently, they were in the middle of flowing the head when these pictures are taken. Any reputable shop wouldnt resurface the head untill all flowing and grinding procedures are complete. Resufacing is the last step before final cleaning and reassembly. Why would you resuface a head then port, flow, port, flow, ect. That would be a perfect way to ruin the fresh surface. Hell, when I worked in a machine shop, I would have lost my job if I was to resuface a head before I did the porting and flowing.

Yeah, I know resurfacing is done last. Thats "cleaned up"? Why would one try and clean up that surface free-hand if they are going to resurface the head? You could very easily take away too much. But either way in the picture you can see that they tried doing something, and you can tell by the gasket that left behind that it will be uneven.

When they do go to put it on the surfacer they will be left guessing because they took material off by hand.

I've seen alot of good machine work and bad machine work. Showing a picture like this to represent your qaulity of work is NOT a good idea.

It looks as if it was cleaned with a scotchbrite wheel but little if any material was removed. You can clearly still see the marking from the fire ring all the way arount the combustion chamber. You can still see traces of the gasket around it also. That head did once have composit gasket material all over it and without cleaning it off, there would be no way to get it to seal properly on the flow bench. As far as machining, they can still touch off on the edges where the gasket material is still intact and be able to accurately tell how much meterial is machine off. Besides, the .0005-.0008" material that might have been removed by the scotchbrite will not be detrimental to performance. And even if you are worried about that little, the stock hg that came on the 4g63 is .047" thick. Most popular replacement gaskets range from .054-.066 thick. About the only other gasket I know are available thinner would be the hks(.039" for the 1mm), SCE copper(.032-.093"), and the SCE titan(.032-.062"). In other words, just going from a stock gasket to either a cometic(.054") or a Mitsu mls(.066") is going to add more material than usually what would be taken off in the cleaning and machining process.
