Harness bar

I drew a little mockup at work using tubing and still having a removeable harness bar along with having it connected to the B and C pillars, but wasn't able to post it for some odd reason (i think my boss has been monitoring my computer usage... maybe they pulled the plug on "dsmtuners.com").

Here's what I was working on. I was thinking that one might want to add a 45* brace for the harness support bar bracket shown, depending on the thickness of steel used for the support bracket. For the mount points I would just keep it simple and copy the DG design by using "L" shaped brackets that bolt to the stock seatbelt bolts and then bolt the "L" bracket to the end of the tubing... just like the DG design. Best part... no bending.

Sorry... my paint brush skills suck.

so i understand why tubing would be better...

now my question is: if i used 1 inch box tubing with a .125 wall thickness the strength and rigidity should increase dramatically, would this suffice the issue of being sturdy for harnesses?

here are some pictures of the bar without powder coat...

provisions for the harnesses can be added whenever, i just chose not to at the current time, since my evo seats won't require them just yet.

wow, i need to dust the back of my car! still allows for a passenger to sit in the back.

Looks great and functional, but I wouldnt like to be sitting in back if you hit the brakes hard... Unless I had a helmet.

yep, the bar is removable...as far as rigidity, i'd say it's just as strong and safe...the one inch box tubing is fricken strong and the 7/16" bolts are as well...now i need some powdercoat!

bumping an old thread, but what were the measurements? I'm really interested in fabbing one very soon.

Well anyone who is interested should contact JMFabrications.com. Yes, they are the infamous maker of the super sweet intake manifolds. They can custom make 2G harness bars that directly replace the stock seatbelts, but they look 100% stock and work with the factory interior plastics. If I remember correctly I was quoted $400-$500.

Im actually working on fabbing some of these up right now using a very similar design. The main differences in mine are Im using alot heavier metals because I want some structural bracing too.

From the front to back upper seat belt mounting points, Im using 1x1/4 rectangle tubing with 1/16" thick walls. Where they bolt up in the back, Im gonna use some longer bolts and big spacers so they dont hit the plastics and stay very sturdy.

For the middle, Im using 1x1 square tubing with 1/8" walls. Each side will mount with the thickest bolt I can use without sacrificing structural integrity. Ive decided to run the bolts from top to bottom kinda hard to explain without pics so Ill try my best

1/8 plate
-------------------- 1.5 in long
|| bar
-------------------- 1.5
^bolt

the bar will go in the middle and the front end of the bar will have another plate bracing it. Once I bolt this thing in, its not going anywhere. I also have 3/8" round bar for the harness provisions behind each seat.

The first model of this thing is gonna be made of steel. I know its kinda heavy but its waaay cheap to perfect the design with. I also really dont give 2 shits about weight as of right now but in the end, Its gonna be made of aluminum and powdercoated to whatever color i choose.

Im also looking at doing a tube bar that mounts from the upper front belts with a bend around to the backs of the seats and some support bars going to the bottoms of the front seatbelts. I know its pretty much the design that the other manufacturers are using but I know I can build the exact same thing for way cheaper and sell it for about half of what they go for. Most of the materials are coming out of my employers scrap piles(brand new stuff, just lengths that they dont need) I work for a fencing/railing/structural steel company so I can pretty much take what I need or buy it for some pocket change.

Ill post pics when i get the square tube one all rigged up. After I get done with these projects, Im gonna start working on some really beefy adjustable strut bars and tie bars. Might as well make things cheaper for the broke ass dsm community.;)

any updates on this? I just ordered seats and it would be a shame not to be able to use aftermarket harnesses with them

Nope. Scrapped the idea for bigger and better things at the moment. I had it halfway built and realized that my design wouldnt be the best I could come up with. Once I get some of these other cars done, Ill be able to focus on some fab work and perfect the design before I sell to anyone. Kinda disappointing how priorities change like that but Itll be better in the long run.

that's understandable...I have a friend that may be interested in making one for my car, and then hopefully producing them for sale, so I will keep everyone posted on that as well. I'd really like to keep the cost as low as possible (not $330 like the DG one was) because time yes, but I can't imagine it would cost all that much for materials
