yeah there are alot of terms i just stick to the chiltons terms of using words i dont like to camgear sprockets "cams" i hate that word cams sounds like yams

Hah, same damn thing happened to my GST. But I work for a dealership so I got my harmonic balancer for employee price. :D It had just started to wear away at the timing cover and one bolt holding it on. Just as I got to the place to repair it, the thing split in half! I still have the "two" pieces of my one piece harmonic balancer in my closet. haha.

well i just ordered the unorthodox racing underdrive crank pulley... maybe that will work a little better
Under drive crank pulleys don't have the rubber damper, and are not a good idea for 7 bolt motors, which are susceptible to crankwalk problems. You can get a new stock pulley from rockauto.com for 65 bucks.

dude hrm, well i called dsmparts.com to cancel the order... and they said "ok ill tell them to cancel it but i cant guarantee that it will be cancelled" and i said "Whats the policy on cancelling an order" and they said "we dont guarantee that all orders will get cancelled if asked" i guess i might learn my lesson then LOL

That company used to be so good but lately the customer service seems to be falling apart. How did you pay them? I'm sure you can stop payment some how, you do not want to put a UDP in your car.

i paid by pay pal.... i just went to my online bank account and did a stop payment also. so ill be visiting rock auto. thanks for the info

So is the underdrive pulley ok for a 6bolt? Are the pulleys the same from 6bolt to 7bolt?

dude i have no clue how long this crank pulley was bad before i bought the car... how much does it take to damage the crank???

my first dsm was a 1st gen nt, on my way to work i started to hearing this really bad clutter crash bang crash. pulled over and the pully on the crank was seperated from its significant other completly. after i replaced it. the car was sound. just replace the part and rest at ease. 1 step at a time. :thumb:

sir, dont you dare let another shop do the work. the case cover is only a few bolts, the water pump is int he way but yea.. its going to take some time. and for the crank pully? its like 5 bolts. and all you need to do it remove the driver side tire and splash gards.

:notgood:

to bad your 2nd gen i could help you with parts

Well, the days of my 97 Talon AWD are about over. Just when I'm trying to get ready to sell this darn thing. My Harmonic Balancer split...I've read all the posts about it and I have another one order, should be coming in this afternoon. I have the Backup Manual CD as well, but I can not find anything on how to replace it or get teh belt back on.

Is it as easy as taking of the 4 bolts and putting the new one on. The car is about 4 miles away right now, so I can't view it easily, but when I was under the car this morning, I was wondering if I would have to drop the motor to replace it?? I'm in Hawaii and most folks charge $90-100/hr!! I can't imagine it would take longer than an hour to do, but I do not have the means to drop the motor.

Can someone please point me in the right direction or give me a brief summary to go about replacing this thing myself. The hardest part seems like it would be getting the belt back on. Any help is appreciated.

its easy, pull the drivers splash shield and front tire. Then 4 outside bolts. put the new one one and replace the belts. The belts are tensionsed off of various methods seen in the chiltons manual. should take 1 hour maybe a bit more on the side of the road (thats where I did mine) after helping a friend with his a few weeks earlier. I also had one friend lose his engie when his broke racing at the track, flew thru the timing cover killing the belt. SAD day.

Thanks brother...I remember reading your post about the track incident. I'll giver er a go this afternoon and put new belts on as well. Just wanted to make sure the job wasn't more complicated than it looked. Thanks again.

kinda hard to say could be a number of things.....dad always told me to run a bar of soap on it while it is running. Used to stop it on the old cars. Could be a bad bearing...when you say everything is new...what is everything?

Slap some vaseline on the lucky belt that is squealing. But thats a temporary fix. You need to find the root of the problem. Make sure none of your pulley's are spinning lopsided, does it just happen when its cold ? or does it go on all of the time ?

It happens all the time now...before I had no problem...about a month ago the belts started squealing and then the oil pump gear spun off and took out the timing cover, the timing belt but I saved the motor(4000.00 strocker motor).so I put everything back together brand new and it worked fine but now the belts are squealing again.the water pump pulley has a wobble to it
