Ok got the head off and I was wondering how can you set the cam timing. I think it wasn't done correctly before because I turned the crank I don' tknow how many times and it never got to TDC. So how can I reset it. I know put the crank at 1st cylinder tdc. Also on this motor is the far left or far right cylinder #1. Also am I going to have to reset ignition timing? I took out the CAS so I'm guessing yea and I've never done that(owned a distruberless before) I tried to do a search but no luck with the cam timing. Thanks

vfaq has the whole shabang about setting up your timing and putting on the belt. but basically, set your #1 to TDC (you'll know its at TDC because there is a mark on the crank shaft sprocket that will line up), then if you still have your balance shafts, you'll have to make sure that sprocket is pointing at its respective mark. That can also be set 360 degrees off. Make sure you set it correctly. You know if it's set correctly if you line up the marks, then just turn that sprocket like 1/4 turn then let go. If it falls back towards the timing mark then your good, if it falls away from the mark, then you are 360 degrees off. Also you gotta make sure the cam gear timing marks are alligned to eachother and that the dowl pins in the denter of the gears are facing up. This is prolly rather confusing, so just check out the vfaq. If you need help when your in the middle of it and something just isn't making sense, just IM me or sumone else who knows

edit: ahh and now i realise u were asking about the CAS, if you check out RRE's site, they have a little info about that in one of their tech tip article things. so search around there and you'll find it! good luck

Man I had a problem where when I went to replace the timing belt the timing marks on the oil pump, crank, and cams never lined up before taking off the belt. So we just took it off and set all the timing marks before installing the new balance shaft belt and timing belt. I made a thread on this also. Never figured it out then the thread god locked. Check it out. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89788

So since my balance shafts were removed just set the crank tdc (which is easy with the head off to see #1tdc) set the cams and cam gears and put the belt back on. Also I was wondering WILL I have to reset ignition timing since I took the cas off?

I love how it sounds so easy:p . But yea, you'll probably need to reset the timing again and you really should for your own tuning benefit.

to set #1 at TDC EXACTLY, you can't just do it by looking at the piston. I mean you can get it up, but then you gotta look at the crank shaft sprocket. There are is a little mark that you have to line up. Then you know it is exactly TDC. Then u line up the timing marks on the cams, making sure the dowel pins are pointing up. Then put the belt on. And the CAS will slide right into the cam. And one lip of the CAS will have a groove, the RRE site will show u how to line it up so it's not 180 off. Then you should be ok.

Ok so how do I set the cams, I know how to set the cam gears. But lets say you remove the cam gears from the cams how do you set those so when you tighten the gears back on they're correct?

This statement really Freaking scares me - was the motor was turned over with the Crank & Cams out of time?

There's a damn dowel on the Cam Gears! Why the hell did you take them off anyway?

Make sure NONE of the Pistons are NEAR TDC & set the dowels up & marks opposite like the damn VFAQ says to - What's the problem?

why are you takeing the cam gears off the cams ? what i did is aligned the cam gear marks bout 1 notch off had my buddy slide the belt on the crank and i was holding the cam gears and when i realeased the pressure they were lined up took 10 mins tops

I havn't taken the gears off but because I couldn't get the everything to align before I'm guessing that the pervious owner did and din't align everything up correctly last time he changed the belts. Also on my old car I had to align the cams, then tighten the belt, then tighten the gears on the cams, a much much easier way I personally think of doing it. Anyhow I've looked in the faq about aligning jus tthe cams and can't find it.

On any engine, #1 is the end opposite the clutch.

Waitaminute, I don't know if that applies to Saabs, with the clutch on the front of the engine.

Eh, don't panic, you're probably vision-enabled enough to keep away from Saabs.
