Toronto,
Hey i've had the aircan hacked for quite while and have made it quite far down the upgrade list just wondering are there any benefits from hacking the MAF removing the silencer will it cause the car to run to lean or make the intake alot louder simply i would like to know what is the purpose of doing this other than to improve airflow a bit.

From what I understand the purpose is to lean the car out a bit. By removing the honeycombs you allow more air to pass, but the same amount is being metered, so you have more air going to the motor with the same amount of fuel. This leans out the A/F ratio. Most people say that the problems that come with this mod outweigh the benifits. I guess that is somthing that each person has to decide for themselvs.

as they said above, do not do it. Go the right way with an SAFC< maft or soemthign else along those lines

This is an "oldshool" mod to boost the amount of air the MAS can flow at the same HZ reading and will need an AFC/aftermarket chip to properly compensate.

There are much better options these days (2G/3G MAS, MAFT/MAFT-Pro, VPC).

It did work pretty well back in the day, Al Blaha (the guy whom mastered the art of/sold hacked 1G MASs) ran 10s with one :dsm:

It is a free mod. I removed my lower honey comb and backed my plastic "enrichment screw" out and ran into zero idle, off idle, mid throttle, or WOT issues. My fuel trims were all floating around 12, which indicates that i was in fact running leaner but still w/in the ECUs control so my closed loop operation was fine. And at WOT i gained increases i could feel as leaning out gives you power. AND since the ECU thinks less air is entering the engine then there really is, I probably was getting a little more timing advance in the curve. Another means to increase power.

If you do this, save your honeycomb, you'll need everything to go back to normal when you get larger injectors and SAFC/MAFT/ECU+/DSMLink/EMS/etc. A side benefit to hacking the MAF is that it takes more airflow (horsepower) to overrun it. This is why Al Blaha went 10s w/ stock 1G MAF. And gives you a little more breathing room before having to upgrade to a 2g MAF or a GM MAF.
