just took the manifold off #3 is wet. Hard to see from the pic. All the valves look the same crusty white. What do you suggest next? Remove head and give to machine shop? Does block need to be machined as well? And what’s the approx cost?
Thanks

Valve stem seals does not look all that hard to replace as long as you have a spring compressor, patience and time. Hardest part is probable keeping organized and having clean work area. I plan on cleaning the valves as well and if I have the funds at that time, maybe upgrade to 3g lifters.

$250 or less with gates tbelt??? I priced it out on Extremepsi. Minimum with OEM tbelt (cheapest) and gates wp (which is $43 compared to $170 OEM) is $363. Plus $55 for the tbelt tool kit so a good number would be about $500 just for tbelt job with wp.

Mine had oil all over the valve on #3 (I think). It seeped oil out of the exhaust manifold it was so bad and separately seeped from the stud that goes into an oil passage. And cam seals. It was not drivable (burnt oil smell). It needed to be addressed. Quite a bit of smoke at idle ! I took the head to the machine shop. Went with arp head studs, did a ton of maintenance all throughout, and I am so glad I pulled it all apart ! I fixed so many issues in one project. It doesn't smoke a bit anymore. 192k on the block even. It's not very difficult. Just time consuming ! However it was easy to spend $1400 on that project and I performed all of the work minus machine work. I put 100 miles on it and loved it so much I yanked the transmission to rebuild it.

You left the block surface as is and just cleaned it up?

RockAuto.com is your best friend :) Also, the Gates timing belt tensioner is same quality as OEM, and is WAAY cheaper. Its the one JNZ Tuning uses on their timing belt component kits. If I remember correctly, I spent around $117 for the timing belt kit/tensioner. I know there is a Gates TCKWP kit with the water pump, but I cant remember the exact part number....

and you don't NEEED the timing belt took kit...but it does help. In my 16 years of wrenching on DSMs...ive never had to use a timing belt tool kit to do a timing belt job. And ive done PLENTY of them

I hope this helps

Highly recommend the timing tools. Makes therything easier and the process much smoother

If you don't have revised lifters get those now too

Don't forget cam seals, crank seal, timing pulley seal, valve cover gasket, etc

Water pump brand doesn't matter, gmb was in my duralast box.

And yes it's a time consuming tedious job. It's easier with the head on the block

Thanks all! Plan on doing tbelt sometime this year along with hg, arp stud if they haven't been replaced, and refresh head with 3g lifters and all new seals. I've never done head work but it doesn't seem too too hard.
