GSX Trunk vs. Talon ESi Trunk?

So a long time ago I thew out my spare wheel and trunk cover and all that from my GSX because of a customer enclosure I had in the back. I'm returning most of it back to stock now and picked up a spare wheel from a Talon ESi, however I can't seem to fit the spare wheel flush back into the trunk, without the trunk cover sticking up. I was wondering if anyone has a picture of how it's supposed to be, and also is there any difference in the trunks and/or spare wheels between a GSX and a Talon ESi? Thanks.

Its completely different back there, if you want it to sit right you need to get everything out of the back of an AWD 2g. GSX/TSi AWD's had full size spares in the back... the mounting bracket and cardboard that cover it are completely different, the AWD's even have two black storage compartments around the spare as well that the FWD's didn't have.

Damn. I can get the spare wheel to fit fine, as well as the trunk floor/carpet, but not both at once. Maybe I'll just have to make a compromise for now...Thanks alot!

2g AWD's had a mini tire. There really isnt much spare space for a full on tire.

No 2Gs ever came factory with a full size spare.


AWD chassis used a 16" donut while all FWD had a 14" donut. The size difference was to accomodate the larger front calipers found on only the AWD front brakes.
NOTE: Anyone who does a AWD front brake conversion on their FWD needs to be aware that their 14" spare wil not fit on the front. If you have a front tire go flat you have to put the spare on the rear and move a good rear up to the front.



AWD trunk covers sit higher on top of the black plastic side supports. 97 Talon TSI AWD shown in photo below. These also used a special cover and a special carpet piece. The large rear under-tire washer fluid reservoir found in the AWD trunks also helped dictate the higher trunk floor.

See how the carpet does NOT step down from the area between the tires? The entire trunk carpet area is flat.

99 Eclipse OZ (FWD). See how the carpet steps up in the front? That's because the FWD trunk area is deeper and only hold a 14" donut. All FWD models share the same trunk carpet and trunk cover parts.

^Thanks alot for the information. Good to know about the spare wheel issue as the one I got was from an ESi (I have a GSX). I'm going to have the time of my life finding those black bins and the trunk floor and carpet, .

i recently aquired those 2 black plastic awd pieces... im planning on putting them on my fwd gst will they bolt on? i havent had time to try because i have a custom box covering the whole trunk, i plan on removing the box and placing those trunk pieces and doing a awd front brake conversion will the bigger 16 inch spare fit in my gst awd trunk? and what will i have to do to make my trunk look good with those plastic pieces? need the awd carpet and wooden cover? what about the washer fluid resevoir do i need that? is anything else different in the trunk between the awd and fwd? the side panels the same? does anyone know where i can find that side panel cover in beige like that pic?
im trying to find all the options and restoring my car to have all options possible

It's not right that a 14" spare wheel doesn't fit on a GSX front brake conversion. I had to use a 14" one when I had a flat tire and there weren't any problems at all. The only problem I could imaging is the heat accumulation since there is almost no space between caliper and the wheel.

GSXs came with 16/17 inch spares because you can't run separate size tires on an AWD, otherwise one side will want to spin faster than the other and we all know how bad that would be.

Doesn't matter if it fits, they came with 16" spares for a reason and H4G64T pretty much summed it up.

will the 2 plastic bins off the gsx trunk bolt in a gst trunk? will the bigger 16 inch spare fit in my gst awd trunk? and what will i have to do to make my trunk look good with those plastic pieces? need the awd carpet and wooden cover? what about the washer fluid resevoir do i need that off a gsx?
