This thread is meant as a warning to all my fellow DSM enthusiasts out there. Hopefully you can learn from my mistake and save yourself some headaches and money.
I wanted to check the oil pressure my engine was making at higher RPMs so I connected an electronic sending unit to my oil filter housing and set it up to be logged through my Zeitronix system. I had the front of my car on jack stands as I wanted easy access under the car if oil began to leak around the sending unit. I started the car and checked my oil pressure on start-up and then let the car idle up to operating temp which took about 15 - 20 minutes. During this time the clutch pedal was not depressed so the clutch was engaged an spinning the input shaft in the trans. Once I hit full operating temperature I applied about 30% throttle and began running up through the RPM range. At about 5200 RPM my trans made a loud clunk and the car stalled. The engine started again with the clutch pedal pressed and then stalled again as soon as I let the clutch out.
Upon disassembley of the transmission this is what we found.
The transmission is oiled by the front differential spinning and pumping oil up to the top of the gear stacks where it can drip down from a plastic oiling rail that is in the trans. So I pretty much spun the crap out of the transmission without providing any oil to the moving parts.
Hopefully this helps stop someone from making the same mistake as me.
