gst using oil?

Hey guys. i have a 99 gst. I got the car last september and the guy said he had been running mobil 1 10w-40. it did not use a drop of oil for the first 1500 miles i had it.

I changed the oil the first time and i switched to mobil 1 10w-30. since then it has been using a little oil. There is no leaks that i can see... none in the garage and it does not smoke. car is pretty muck stock, ive seen it put out some soot from the exhaust when ive got on it pretty good but i think its just gas and stuff since i pretty much baby the car and dont even get on it much at all.

the ONLY leak i can see is a very small oil spot on the valve cover under the half moon gasket. The car has 110,000 miles on it. but i want it back to using no oil! im thinking maybe the valve stem seals.

It uses 1 qt ever 3000 miles i think. Ive never let it get below a half qt low on the dipstick because i check it ever so often and just add the little it has used. Hope some of you dsm wisemen can help figure this out. Thanks!

First do a compression test/leak down test. Also I would replace the valve cover gasket and the spark plug tube gasket. Try that then go from there.

Our turbo motors don't have the tight clearance as does little 1.8's or any other nomally aspirated motors. Thus, using 10w30 will increase the consumption factor a bit. If you're anal on this, head back to 10w40.

BUT, a small primer: EVERY Internal Combustion engine made in the world will ALWAYS use oil during its run. It burns off oil that remains on the cylinder walls when the piston travels up and down - this is why your oil goes dark after awhile.

Plus, you doing 3k miles on a quart is nothing to sneeze at. Even if a motor does 1500 miles (like mine) on a quart is really nothing to worry about. If you're going through a quart every 300 miles, then you got a problem (tired rings, valve seals, et.al. ...)

So. small tip: RELAX!

i dont think my valve cover gasket is leaking. It is a VERY small leak under the half moon. I will be replacing that and the valve cover gasket in a month or so when i get my valve cover powder coated.

So, do you really think going back to mobil 1 10w-40 could make it go back to not using any oil? it seems like everybody thinks the mobil 1 10w-30 is the best.

All the pcv valves I have used have been garbage...even brand new Mitsu ones. I ended up using a check valve to fix my problem. Use the search and find the check valve thred, it's helpful.
