Putting a new clutch in my 1999 GST that I got from a friend and he mentioned something about 3rd and 1st not wanting to go into gear easily, so I was just going to save myself the trouble and put a different transmission in while I got the old one out.

Basically what I'm wanting to know is, what transmissions are compatible with a 1999 GST?

I know if I go to a junkyard and tell them I need a trans for a GST they will add on a bit to the price.

Its a 5spd BTW.

Thanks in advance!!!!

(If you got a trans and you are in the ST. Louis area, lmk. LOL.)

@ 95eclipseguy- Ill try to check the cables after work, but from what I remember when I pulled the trans, everything was tight and looked alright.

@ chadillac2820- Again, ill run through them when I get home. What is it ill be looking for when I'm shifting it, just hard to get into gear?

For what it's worth the Spyder GS trans is interchangable with the GST trans. The gearing is lower though so you'll be spinning the wheels like it nothing. For that reason I wouldn't recommend it.

Are the gears grinding? It sounds like the cables are damaged or the shifter cable mount bracket is loose. 1st and 3rd are both with the shifter in the forward position. There is one other transmission that will work and that is the spyder 2.4 transmission or galant 2.4 5 speed (same transmission). As stated the gearing is different. The gears are also not as strong and it uses straight roller bearings, not the taper bearings like the turbo transmission. It also uses a different inner axle cup.

well you can also use the trans out of a SOHC n/t 3000gt

The bellhousing, starter mount location and slave mount location are different.

oops my bad i was told you could i guess he was wrong.

I have a spare transmission but you are a long way away.

Got a chance to shift through the gears on my trans. The gears went in easy enough.

To answer bryanwheats question, the gears did grind a bit going in when I rode in the car with my friend. He also seemed to have to push the shifter toward the gear and wait a couple seconds for it to 'pop' in. That's the best I can describe it right now.

Thanks to all of you for the transmission suggestions. If I was going to make this a track car, I'd probably look into the spyder transmission.

The two guys with the transmissions, thanks, but shipping costs would be WAY too much. LOL

I wont know if it was the cable mount on the transmission til I throw it all back together.
I'm off work tomorrow, so as long as its not raining (no garage), ill spend some time tracing the cables and making sure they aren't cut or sheered anywhere.

Look at where the cable mount bracket bolts to the transmission. There are some metal washers with rubber on them. IF the rubber wears out than it will make the bracket loose.
