Ok, here's the deal I got a 98 2g n/t. My tranny grinds like hell in 1st, 2nd, and 3nd. It goes into all the gears smoothly but when I release the clutch and start accelerating thats when it starts to grind, It does this all the way to 3rd. Theres no noise when the clutch is in, only when released. It also sounds like the axles are loose. I've been searching to see if anybody else has a similar problem but no luck. Can anyone help me out here before I go out and buy parts I don't need!!!!!!!!!

maybe he just needs to adjust the clutch lines or whatever... if they are off enof the shifter could be being prevented to shift fully....

I would check the cables for stifness, maybe get some cable stiffners if in question, cause when i got my eclipse the i got them like the next week and it made alot of difference

If its going into gear without problems, its not the shifter or shifter lines. As for the clutch line idea, he should first check the clutch fluid level. If its low, fill it up with a little DOT 3 brake fluid, and see if there's any improvement. Its possible that the clutch's slave cylinder isn't receiving enough pressure either due to a lack of fluid from air in the lines or a pin hole or something.

I'd put my money on the shot clutch possibility however, especially if there's a grinding sound AFTER the tranny is in gear. If it were happening while shifting into gear, then it would be either the shifter link or the synchros.

Does it grind in 4th or 5th? If it only does it in 1st 2nd or 3rd than you tranny's going bad. Does it make any noises in neutral with the clutch engaged?

Sounds like my problem a few months ago. I had a sound like grinding metal that I checked and it was definitely coming from the end of the tranny away from the clutch. I was told it was bad bearings on the output shaft. Hurry up and get it to a tranny shop, b/c you may get lucky and only have to replace the bearings, but if it damages something else, it could be a full rebuild like mine was. no fun. :notgood: good luck.

can't really hear anything in 4th or 5th. No noise going into gear or in neutral, just when in gear accelerating at about 1000 to 3000rpms I can hear it. I changed the tranny fluid today w/ pen. syncro, that did nothing!
