I have a 98 gsx and just got it back. Tonight while out driving it, I turned a corner and all of the sudden got this really bad grinding noise from under the car.
It happens at both idle and acceleration. I have a brand new act 2600 clutch kit installed and my buddy a fellow dsmer and mechanic put this in as well as a new transfer case.
You can hear the noise from inside the car but cant hear it at all from the outside. Over the phone he said that it could be the rear engine mount but wasnt sure. I was just wondering if from this vague description anyone could give me a hand. Thanks.

Gee I hope your buddy filled the transfer case back up with fluid.

Your description is very vague indeed. Can you describe when exactly the noise occurs (eg. while turning, accelerating, etc.)? Is it constant or intermittent? What does the sound remind you of if you had to compare it? Are you noticing any other problems?

its consistent. You turn the car on and its there from idle.

I dont even know what to compare it to. I know its not a clutch grind. I have no idea. my buddys coming over tonight to look at it.

Nope, still there whether in out out of gear or if the clutch is in or out.

If the rear motor mount broke, could it cause the engine to hang just a tad and make something rub?

Would a broken rear engine mount cause a bad grinding as soon as you start the car?

On a side note, you can drive the car but I haven't bc I don't want to break something else.
Also, while the car was running, there was a spark coming from behind the engine behind the belts and pulleys underneath the emissions stuff. When we had the engine on, we could push down on the engine and would hear a "rubbing". That's what makes me think its a mount but I'm not sure if it would cause the grinding/ vibration.
This all happened right after a turn.

is your starter disengaging?
or
could be coming from the front, one of the covers loose maybe or your main pulley rubber broken loose?

raise the hood start the car and try to pin point where the noise is coming from.

yes, but running without the mount is a good deal different than running with a broken mount. a broken mount would still have its components to rub, and a missing mount would leave all the clearance. On that note, a buddy of mine has been running his 2g without the rear mount bolt for like 4 months now.

The weird thing is that if u listen to it from under the hood, you would never know anything is wrong. You can only hear it from inside the car.
The only thing wrong under the hood is that behind the engine and behind all of the belts and pulleys, something is sparking.
That is what makes me thing something shifted when a mount broke but I have no idea.

when you say behind the engine do you mean between the firewall and engine? behind the belt and sparking? About the only thing down there is the AC compressor and the pulley always runs and is controlled by an electric clutch. maybe - your pulley is touching the body.

That is what my buddy/mechanic first suggested about the ac pulley. That area is definitely where the sparks are coming from.
I just don't know what the grinding/vibration could be.
We are going to take a look at it later tonight. I will definitely post back with an update.

bad ac clutch?

OK, so from my diagnosis(i am in no way a mechanic or anything) I think that the rear motor mount broke. From what I can see, the ac pulley is sitting on what I think is the control arm. In addition, the belt is starting to get ground up.
This definitely explains the sparks and I hope the grinding/vibration.

Did you ever get this fixed. I'm having the EXACT same problem with my 99 gsx. Plus a clunking sound when I crank and turn off the engine.
