The big pin comes out when the small pin breaks. I had one break on me from too much wheelhop. You know those spider gears and side gears inside the stock diff spin on bushings- there aren't any ball bearings in there. What happens during some hard wheelhop is the side gears momentarily bind up and lock onto the big pin and try to spin it. The smaller roll pin that holds the big pin (cross shaft) is only about 1/4" diameter, it can't hold any torque. Wheelhop snaps it like a twig. Sometimes you can drive for months with a broken roll pin before anything else inside the diff blows, sometimes it goes quickly.
If anyone is still on the stock diff, you can reinforce it by welding the cross shaft to the diff housing. That eliminates the puny roll pin. The only drawback is you will never be able to install or remove any LSD inserts.
