hey folks, got brand new 7 blade HX35 today, wanted to share some pics of it and hear some comments as well.
was told that it should be with 12cm housing but turned out it has '14' marking inside scrolls, if my eyes serve me well

did HX35 ever come with bigger than 12cm housing ? should I swap it and go with 12 cm one ? because I want as street friendly setup as possible. don't want to sacrifice spool as long as I dont rev too high, ~7.6-8K rpm max. (2.3 engine)
leave it as is or what to do ?


second question, did these turbos ever come with billet 7 blade wheel or it's just a regular one ?

Of course.

If you want the quickest spool possible in that platform, then yes.

Some HX35's did....yours may have as well- pull the cover and get some better pics of the wheel. Not that it matters- the design and weight of the cast and billet wheels are almost identical- the billet is just stronger.

That's a genuine, factory reman'd Holset.

And it appears to have a billet wheel, but then again I'm used to looking at 30 year old cast H1E wheels. The housing looks to be a 14cm. Whether the 12cm would provide significantly better spool/response without choking the air-hungry 2.3L, I have no clue. But what I can tell you is that a true twin-scroll manifold would be worth every penny, and that using the factory internal wastegate isn't the best idea.

yep, I'm definately going to fabricate my own true twin-scroll manifold, no questions here just thinking about going single wg with divided discharge all the way to valve face, or to go with two wastegates

p.s. staying with internal gate is still tempting idea

Impossible to know.

In many cases, yes...but Holset doesn't care about spool- they use billet for better durability. Billet is more dense with less air pockets than cast, so there's a good chance an equal-spec billet wheel is actually heavier than cast.

p.s. staying with internal gate is still tempting idea

Would never control boost properly pulling from one runner like that.

one more, is my turbo assembly balanced or component balanced ? I'm interested if I just disassembly it for overhaul, or say change the wheel with another balanced one, will it need rebalancing after assembly ?

I would think it would need to be rebalanced for sure! If you want to rebuild it, Justin aka JustMX141 is the guy to talk to. He just did one of mine.

Depends if there are any balance grinds on the compressor locknut or not. It's a new turbo- I wouldn't screw with it....as long as you oil it properly it's going to last you a very, very long time.

no grind on the locknut but there is one on the compressor wheel though

I remember when Holsets just starting hitting DSMTuners a few years back and he grabbed the bull by the horns with it.

I havn't been in DSM's as much and my car has been sitting for a few years now due to RL and Money etc.

But its nice that when I get a chance to do something to it and I get back to these forums I see him still here answering questions to this day.

You could always run a non-divided exhaust manifold and install a quick spool valve between the manifold and turbo to block half of the turbo housing off until it is spooled up.
