Gm Maf 3/3.5 ??

i know i have seen a couple of dead end threads kind of asking the same questions im going to ask but it dosnt seem like any where i look it gives me an anwser on what im lookin for. i know i need an upper intercooler pipe, BOV, intake, MAF-T(or DSM link) and a GM MAF either 3 or 3.5in

Can someone tell me the difference in using a 3 or 3.5in GM MAF(besides the size)?

i have noticed that you can only use a 3.5 on a blow thru setup(not even quite sure what this means:confused:) on the intercooler pipe?

Blow thru setup ?

With a blow thru set up can you use any upper intercooler pipe?

Like i said im sorry if this is been repeated but i have been lookin for days for these anwsers and just cant find them
 
.... The GM MAF can be configured in 2 ways. Blow Through , the most popular, is when the MAF itself is in the upper IC pipe. This is beneficial for 2 reasons. First, it eliminates a restriction before the turbo; and second, you can VENT YOUR BOV , which everyone loves , by putting the sensor after the BOV and allowing backed up charge air to be vented before it is measured.....

....The second method of sensor installation is Draw Through, which is far less popular, but still affords less of a restriction for the turbo, over the stock MAF. In this installation the GM sensor is simply installed in the stock MAF location. You cannot vent your BOV this way, since the sensor will be before the BOV and the air has already been metered.....


Simply put... if your planning to go Blow Through... use a 3' GM Maf...

If your planning to go Draw Through... get a 3.5' GM Maf
 
The only difference is the size. I have the 3.5" Maf in the UICP and its a PIA to fit. Not to mention it goes from 2.5" piping to 3.5" maf and back to 2.5" piping which probably just slows down airflow.

Blow Through- Is when you move the maf to the UICP and there is nothing infront of the turbo.

Draw Through- Is when you keep the maf in front of the turbo.
 
alrite so go with the blow thru set up with a 3in GM MAF ... Do u have to mod the upper intercooler pipe to fit the GM maf ??
once again sorry for askin if these are basic question i have never done this setup before and want to get it rite the first time ....
 
So cut the upper intercooler pipe to fit the new Maf and just use silicon couplers and t bolt clamps to sercure it in ?? does it matter where on the pipe i cut it?? besides the fact i need to put it before the BOV ... ??
 
You actually want it after the bov otherwise there's really no advantage to doing a blow through setup, you cant vent unless the mas is after the bov
 
So your tellin me i want to go throttle body, intercooler pipe with bov on it, then my new Maf ??
or throttle body, cut intercooler with New Maf on it, then the bov ??
 
oh LOL...we're saying the same thing, just each of us is thinking of it opposite of one another. You're right. I always think starting at the turbo, then licp, then intercooler, etc. But if you're going backwards from the throttle body then yes you want it before your bov
 
What else do u have done to your car, i really wouldn't do this unless your getting a front mount at the same time or at least hard intercooler piping. Its not the first thing to do, just to vent your bov.
 
yea i thought we were thinkin the same thing LOL,

this isnt my first mod at all, i have stage 2 BC cams, eagle rods, JE pistons, 3" magnaflow catback, lower lcp, and hks bov

and if i was to get this done i would have an uicp and intake

i still have stock turbo but i really didnt want to get to crazy with my turbo to begin with like a EVOIII or 16G

is there mods i should be doing before i do all this to vent my BOV ??

1. Greddy UICP
2. Full Hard Pipe intake
3. 3" GM Maf
4. Megan racing Downpipe
i just need to get the 2 gen translator and a wide band

i had a couple of questions before i got started, i was wonderin if i should replace my o2 housing while im doin all of this i was readin some threads with other people havin problems with the o2 sensors causein there wide bands to act up ?? and what o2 sensor should i go with i still have a stock 14b turbo, but want to swap it out for 18G or 20G in the next couple of up comin months?? also when i mod my uicp to put the 3" GM Maf, is there an exact pt i should cut between the bov and end of the pipe ??

you still have stock 14b turbo? do you mean you swapped your t25 out for a 14b because stock turbo on 2g is t25 wich blows and not in a good way LOL
 
yea my buddy had the car before me and swapped it for a ported 14b. I have decided im adventually goning to get a E316G and i already have purchased the E3 O2 housing, can i use that housing on my 14b or can i strickly only use it on E316G ?

ummm i was talkin to the tech at Extreme PSI, and before i got my 3" MAF they had a huge recall on them for leaks. i had to wait another week for delivery for them to straighten out the leak issues. From what i have learned in this thread and reading many others is that 3.0" = blow thru 3.5 = draw thru set up, im pretty sure this is correct and all the pics on this thread show the 3.0 blow thru set up
 
Just talk to the tech at Extreme and he said " Yes, GM did go through a revision at one point, but have since gone back already. As of 06-17-09, we have the newest ones that will accept
boost without leaking"
 
If you just want to bolt parts on and not worry about modifying piping, etc. Check out:

They have UICP that are ready to go for a MAFT setup, and all dejon stuff is great quality. Im a fabricator myself so buying somthing as simple as intercooler piping is something I would never do, but for others its a great solution if you have the cash.
 
Yea i noticed them a day to late before i bought greddy UICP set-up kinda kickin myself in the ass for that one :ohdamn:
 
I don't know if it helps your decision at all, but a good buddy of mine attempted to run a 3.5" MAS plumbed into his 2.5" intercooler piping. He had couplers in order to make it work, but with the sensor on the car it never revved out clean. It seemed to break up in the top end under hard acceleration. He switched to a 3" MAS in the same position and the problem went away.

The rapid expansion of the airflow right at the sensor wasn't a good thing apparently.
 
id just go with a 3", well that actually want i have waiting to get installed! but why would you want a 3.5" anyway when you exaust isn't even 3.5"

cant give much info on this, just my opinion that 3.5" seems pointless! :/
