I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?
 
check ## air fuel ratio, lean afr can cause alot of heat , exhaust temp will rise and exhaust will glow.

but isnt glow kinda normal , mine glows , but not as bright as the sun :p
 
Glow is only "normal" if you are running it hard.

And by looks of OPs mods, he is running rich if anything.

well mine isnt glowing bright like the sun but my other eclipse didnt glow but this car is glowin i am just worried cause i just a 16g in today and i put it on today i dont want that shit to crack
 
My brother's mani used to glow and he had a leak between the mani and turbo. Come to find out his evo mani was warped when he bought it. The manifold was cast wrong somehow and would never seal. You may have a leak.
 
I would check for codes if you can.

How does it run? Smooth or choppy? Quick or doggy?

Did this just start with the 16g instal or was it happening before?
 
It really should not be glowing brightly unless you're boosting hard. If it's a light orange it's probably fine, but if it's bright then there is a problem. If you can see it during the day, you're f*cked.
 
I can see mine faintly if I've been boosting hard, a little more if I've been REALLY getting on the throttle. The only time it really glowed for me was when I had a bad TPS and was running really rich.
 
ok so i fixed my cooling prolblem and now my manifold is turning cherry red after i drive it. the manifold gasket is bran new and the manifold to turbo gasket is bran new same with the turbo to o2 gasket. My o2 to dp gasket is deff leaking. and my cat is bad i think b/c theres a 3in on a stock cat it so restrictive.
 
how can you tell that the manifold is red after you drive it..get the heat shields back on there.

manifolds get red hot ,the heat shields need to be on there or you will start melting wires and fans!
 
If it happens after you drive the car hard, it's normal. If it happens just cruising around, then you may have a problem that's causing really high egts.
 
Well, how's the tune on the car? How's it running other than that?

What exactly was fixed with the cooling system?

We fixed the fan problem because the main fan was not turning on. i checked the temp sending unit and replaced it same thing with the thermostat. The fan still didn't turn on so i got a slim fan from my buddy and hooked that up its a 12 in 880. As for the tune the car is bone stock no turbo mods just 3in from o2 back on a stock cat and 2g o2 housing. The car used to be A/T but i did the swap. Its just weird b/c its got bluetop 450's in it and it dident have A/T manifold on it. I put evo 3 manifold on it. when the car was A/T it dident heat up like that but the car was also stuck in 3rd gear so i couldn't realy get on it. I dont kno why its heating up. I think its the stock cat everyone is telling me by the smell that its the cat but i dont know.
