Glowing red. [Merged 1-7] Exhaust, turbo, glow, hot

I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

It's the only thing New Hampshire could come up with to put on the back of their State quarter.

It broke off later that month, or close to it. Figure the luck.

Hey New Hampshire, our rock is bigger than YOUR rock.

If you think your cat is a restriction, which I asume you must think it is pluged in some way, then just take it out, and test the car. If you are in a highly populated area and cannot just zip the car up and down the road without a cat on it, then try and get a test pipe and throw that on there. If that doesn't fix it then check your base timing. If your base timing is off there is a chance that the car may be running lean which also can make the manifold turn red under conditions where it may not usually.

I'm leaning towards the timing thing. When my timing belt messed up on my NT a while back, the Header was Glowing Red where the 4 pipes went to 2, and that was the only time I have ever seen it glow at all

The car used to be A/T but i did the swap. Its just weird b/c its got bluetop 450's in it

do you have the manual ecu to control the manual injectors? otherwise youll be dumping a lot of extra fuel which can cause the mani to glow if its burning the fuel out in the manifold

If its red from idling, the car is most likely too rich. Fuel is going to the manifold and burning there. That or plugged up cat/exhaust

I am pretty sure i have a bad turbo, but i need more opinions. Last night i was driving and it was boosting high and spiking like crazy. Sometimes my turbo will spool normally. Other times it will constantlly spike. Anyway by the time i got home, my oil pressure light came on and i checked out my oil level and before i could , i noticed my exhaust manifold was GLOWING RED! Even the heat shield bolts that touch it were glowing. Does a bad turbo usually do this kind of thing? By the way, my car was not overheating. Thanks for any input.

Turbo's generate a lot of heat. If you were boosting hard for a while, it is common to see a very hot/glowing manifold.
This is why people tell you to keep the heat shield.... so that this heat is somewhat "contained" from making everything else hot.
