I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

Actually, I was just messing around. I just found it humours while reading this thread that he was labled as a DSM God. Not because I question his knowledge, but because out of all the others I have looked at nobody is labled as a DSM God. Even those that have the same amount of reputation as him. hehe

try checking your timing. i had a similar problem on my 92 AWD and it turned out that the timing was off just a little, and the rear balance shaft was 180 degrees out of alignment.

So I bought a 93 laser earlier today and while I was buying in the salesman said he would throw in the talon in for the samel price as well. I go over and look at it and sweet its a 90 tsi awd 127k miles on it. Get in, starts right up, sounds nice, no idle. Power steering all shot to hell thought takes all I got to turn the wheel. So I wait till about 2.a.m. to go get it when theres no traffic and I can drive it home. Drive in open and opener up a little on the highway. I get home and theres smoke coming from under the hood. I open it and the exhaust manifold is glowing at me like a firefly. What should I replace to get everything running smooth?

I would check the cat out. If the manifold is glowing the exhaust gases may not be exiting quick enough. Does it boost slowly?

The glowing manifold, I wouldnt worry much about that.

As for the smoke, have you checked your dipstick? I remember when mine popped out for the first time on the way to school. It scared the crap out of me. Smoke just poured out of the hood. Sure enough, the dipstick shot out and got oil all over the exhaust manifold, causing that to smoke :D

I would double check all of your oil and coolant lines, just to make sure they arent leaking on the exhaust.

The valve covers on these cars are only supposed to be torqued down to somewhere around 3-4 ft. lbs., if I recall correctly. The first time someone removes the valve cover and then reinstalls it using their trusty 3/8" drive ratchet, there's a good chance they stripped a hole or three. We're talking steel bolts versus aluminum heads and the bolt usually wins. Once you've stripped a couple holes, leaks will appear soon enough. If any of those leaks are near the front of the engine, oil can find it's way to the manifold (and it doesn't take much), which will certainly create a bit of smoke under the hood, normally accompanied by a lovely aroma. This has been the case with a couple of my DSM's.

So check to see if you have any noticeable leaks around the gasket or outside bolt holes as well as around the inside bolts under the spark plug cover. If it appears that this is the problem, review the VFAQ on how to use a Heli-Coil® kit to repair the once threaded holes. I would suggest also replacing your valve cover gasket and PCV while you have the cover off. I always treat a used car with the assumption that the previous owner did very little [if any] maintenance. :laser:

Man never seen somthing glowing like that though, maybe 2 in the morning gave it a better effect. I'll check the valve cover for the leaks, I know theres a leak out the turbo. Free is free thanks for the responses.

You said the power steering wasn't working on the car? Hows the power steering belt? Because the power steering belt also runs the water pump, so your car could have been overheated.

You are a good man, the power steering belt is off, will put one on and see if that fixes the problem :thumb:

dip sticks sometimes shoot out on 1g's, scared the crap out of me in my first 1g. just take some vice grips and squeeze the dip stick holderat the tip with the dip stick in, thats what I did:D

That would be the last thing you want to do.

The alternator belt is connected to the crank pulley and water pump, as well as the alternator. Then the power steering belt runs off of the water pump's 2nd pulley. So as long as you have the alt. belt, you have a water pump and alternator.
