I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

I have a 97 GST with the EVO III 16G and this summer weather is killing my car. Sometimes when I drive it kinda fast, like over 90mph, when I get home and lift the hood the manifold glows. :notgood: I was wondering what could I do to keep this from happening or what could I do to keep it from getting as hot. :dsm:

You don't have any fuel management listed in your profile. Is that the case? What boost levels are you running? Do you have an AFPR? Injectors? Have you logged at all? Do you have an EGT gauge?

You haven't given enough information and me guessing won't do you any good.

what it means most likely is that you are running lean. A lean mixture causes hotter exhaust gases. In my case, the only time i've ever seen my manifold turn pink even was when i kept hitting fuel cut (the fuel cut off while air still going in... extremely lean mixture) Other than that, i can run full boost for a while and i won't see pink cuz im running rich right now.

But yea, the best way to get rid of that is to upgrade your fuel system. at 11lbs on a evo 16g you should be good with ur fuel mods. But for some reason it seems as tho you might be still running lean if this happens often. Get a datalogger and maybe an afc and see if you need to richen it up a bit.

Of course... maybe a glowing manifold is normal... I just wouldn't think so.

Do a search for glowing manifold. Yes, It could be a problem.. But, If you drive up a long hill or go for a long ride and pop your hood, The manifold will also be glowing. You hafto also understand how hot the exhaust gases are when they are going through the manifold.

" My exhaust manifold/turbocharger housing glows red at night! Is there a fix?
Search for this topic now! "

" No, this is normal. Exhaust gas temperatures on DSMs range from about 775 degC to 825 degC on-highway, depending on whether you are within or over the speed limit. Most materials start to get 'red' hot at about 800 degrees C. The only solution to this 'problem' is to take it easy on the throttle. "

Hey so i have a 1g '92 Eagle Talon TSI awd. its and automatic. i have upgraded to a turbo and injectors off of a 5-speed talon. My exhaust manifold and even part of the exhaust half of the turbo are getting extremely hot, so hot that it glows at night, causing my cam cover to melt, and my fans to melt. I have no cat on my exhaust. its 2" 3/4 down pipe, and 3" the rest of the way back, so i dont think that is the problem. possibly thinking the timing might be off, anyone with any ideas or help please respond.

Lots of people get glowing manifolds, turbos, and downpipes. Put back on the heatshield and stuff will quit melting. Search glowing manifold you will find 1.35 million threads on it.

Check the ignition and cam timing..

Depending on your airflow you could be really rich or lean.

Really rich.. Burning exhaust in the manifold...

Really lean hot EGTs and potential for roasted valves and pistons.

If it was just the turbine housing more so concentrated around the nozzel area I would say it is normal..

I wide band tune and my turbine housing glows...

I dont think my Mani does but I have heat sheilds on top of header wrap there.. The turbine housing will be next.. Has sheilds on it...

I've done some reading and I've heard you have to change the fpr and change something with the injectors and fuel so your computer knows that you have 450cc injectors...because your car is tuned to 390cc injectors....also, the cams are different from what people have been telling me.

Very close.

ryanstsi: You're running about 15% richer than what the ecu think you are. You need to either swap in a MT ecu or tune it with afc/logger.

i put a mt ecu on car this weekend as a few of you suggested, the car is a little quicker now but the exhaust still glows. A friend hooked his data logger up to the car, told me the timing is good but the car is running really lean. i am going to buy an o2 sensor and see if that helps at all. thank you everyone for you help.

Try turning the boost down a bit.
It doesn't matter if you're running lean or not. If you go out at night and drop the hammer a couple 10 times for 20-30 seconds a piece, you'll notice a nice bright glow from under the hood. Take it easy on the car. It's your friend. It's there for you.
What exactly is your settings in the car? What boost levels are you running, what are you idling at? What plugs and wires are you using?

Like defiant said, glowing turbo manifolds are normal, my manifold glows everytime I drive it. This is not to say you don't have issues but they are not causing your glowing manifold.

Hey the problem is finally fixed. i had a 95 % leak on the # 1 piston and less severe leaks on the other pistons. the blow-by was causing the exhaust temps to skyrocket. thank you everyone for the help.

Blowby goes into the crankcase. How would it affect exhaust temperatures?

Yes, please let me try to elucidate, and remove the apparent confusion.

Horseshit. Blowby goes past the worn rings and into the crankcase, having nothing at all to do with exhaust gas temperatures. If your "leak" had any at all to do with your glowing manifold -which all engines will do, and turbocharged engines will especially do- then it was not a "blowby" leak. A leaking valve might contribute to hotter exhaust, but only for the three or four minutes it'll take for the head of the valve to come adrift of the stem and cause the motor to die in a very messy and noisesome manner.

There, all better now? :D
