ghostly rattle from within my dash

I have a spooky rattling sound in my dashboard, especially noticeable when I go over bumps. Sounds like something loose behind the center air vents. I pulled out the vents and everything looks secure. I popped out the defroster vents and dash speakers and couldn't see or feel anything.Any ideas short of ripping the whole dash out? I'm sick of having to crank my stereo to cover the noise.

I have the exact same thing. I found out that it is hood vibrating because the hinges have play in them. Try to see if that is where it's coming from.

And is it just me or does it seems the 1g's were probably built a little tougher than our 2g's?

i had this as well, never fixed it but always thought it was in the dash by the tweeters and found that the hinge on the hood would rattle.

Maybe its the dash itself? I've used the good ol tennis ball wedged between the dash and windshield trick before.. And like other members have mentioned, make sure it isn't your hood.

I I had the infamous hood rattle, and adjusting the hood bumper seemed to help, although it still happens occasionally while idling. Anyone know of a solution to fix hood play? It's not the bolts bit the actual hinge. However, the ghostly rattle seems to be coming from inside and is something entirely different. I know sound travels oddly, but I swear it's coming from the rear of the heat vents/ upper left glove box area. Definitely not the box.

my friend had the same problem in his 2g. after a he fixed it from deer jumping from of him he said that is it gone now, deer hit the hood and front bumper. 1g's are quite a bit tougher they don't have airbags so they have more bracing and metal.

I had a weird rattle. Ended up being the hood.

As for the hood rattle, I know its the actual hinge that has some play. Is there any way to tighten it up or put something inthere to muffle the rattle? The hood rattle is only obvious at idle sometimes,but the dash rattle happens every time I hitbumps. The dash is secure; this sound is from deep within. Also checked connections at firewall and they're secure.

I've also had some rattles from my dash. I tore apart the center where the radio sits, and found a few lose wires (oe amp wire, attenna wire, and another one). I don't use the radio, and I don't have an oe amp installed. Although I haven't gotten around to see where that third wire goes, but it wasn't plugged in when I got the car. I pulled them back through the carpet and wrapped them up under the seats for now. Also found some change lodge in the metal brackets for the gear selector. Once I took all that out, all the rattle away... until I got some poly motor mounts installed.

Yeah I found an old NJ turnpike token in mine. The whole center console was cracked from the previous owner's stereo being robbed, but I put a new stereo and console in and this rattle didn't start until significantly later. Is there any way the airbag brackets could be loose?

what about the piping for the air vents? not sure that is a possibility but thinking of things mounted deep in the dash
