I will be dropping a slightly used JDM engine into my car to get it running again.

It is a completely stock engine, but I have some upgrades lying around I might wanna throw on there. The car already has an Apexi 3" turboback exhaust with a dump tube, manual boost gauge and an air/fuel ratio gauge.

I was gonna toss my 2g MAS on there with my 550cc injectors. That would be pretty much it for the aftermarket modifications besides the exhaust.

With these few mods, will I need any kind of engine/fuel management system? I currently have none.....and don't expect to have one for some time (Until I further modify my car).

Since I'm messing with the fuel and intake, is there any risk of engine damage while not having a fuel management system? Like running too lean or whatnot?

Thanks for the reply Doctor Shock.

So you think I should just use the 550s and leave out the 2g MAS for now?

Anyone else have an opinion on the matter?

I would think that just installing the 550s would cause problems running rich, not lean. If that air/fuel gauge you have is a wideband, you will be able to tell for sure. But without some sort of tuning device you won't be turning the boost up much past stock, so there is really no point of installing the bigger injectors without someway to tune it, I can't imagine it would do any good.

Yeah, maybe it would be a good idea to just keep things mostly stock for now. Would there be a problem in using a higher flowing K&N filter and pipe instead of a 2g MAS? Or is that basically the same thing?

i had a 255 wally and 550cc injectors and i was able to turn the boost up a couple more psi from the stock setup.
with the stock setup i got my boost up to 14psi with wally and 550cc's i got it to 18 psi and my car ran awesome with 28 mpg:hellyeah: and i beat civics and wrxs(which isnt that hard anyways but you know what i mean) all day long. i thought it was worth it.

but thats just my 0.02cents

you need some type of tuning device to compensate for the injectors. The 2g maf and 550's will get it close though

Yea, but did you have any sort of dataloging setup? How do you know you're engine wasn't running too lean or too rich? You really need some sort of tuning and dataloging setup if you're going to start messing with injector sizing and airflow measuring.

Just leave it alone for now unless you have a wideband 02 sensor and can gauge if you are running too lean/rich. Yeah you could do what shocker did, but he was just attempting to cover up the rich condition by adding more air to the mix. But you really need to use a tuning device to run them properly.

Make sure all the maintenance is done first and that everything is running properly before upgrading parts that will affect the motor.

So why "JDM" as it's the same motor that's in every DSM? This isn't the Honda scene. Every 4g63 is the same regardless of where it's from. The DSM overseas is an import for them. The only benifit for those cars are that they have a different intake manifold, different turbo depending on vehicle and larger injectors that are controlled by that ECU. A certain model has a switchable FWD AWD tranny as well. Motor, is the same.

Oh, I didn't choose that. It's just what they are selling.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, I really appreciate it!

As far as tuning and data lagging set ups go, what do you recommend? I am not familiar with this subject. I posted this in a previous thread, but got no response so maybe I'll try it here.

This device seems pretty easy to use.....especially for a newb like me!

Any thoughts or opinions? Thanks.

Opinions? What's new at DS-Map? | DSMAP

Jackal is incredibly easy to use. All you need is a MAP sensor and GM IAT, and a $40 harness (or wire it up yourself, which is also easy) and 5 posts on DS-MAP to download Jackal.

The base map will get the car started and a few tweaks to get the AFR's at idle and cruise where they should be. Blackouttsi has an awesome timing map once you get the hang of Jackal and show some logs with good results.

Or you can just get DSMLink and spend a ton of money. Slider the MAF clamp, click the waste money checkbox, and call it a day.

Thank you. I appreciate your help :)

When you get your wideband I'll recommend the Innovate LC-1 as it's shown to have top accuracy with logging and is compatable with ECMLink if you go that route (one tuning option). There are a lot of different tuning programs out there and it all depends on what your goals are, now and the future.

Yeah, I just want to get a feel for what's out there for tuning and what devices may be easiest to use since I'm new to this. I just want to get it done right, and since I can't afford to have it done by someone else, I'll have to do it myself.

As for now, I will leave everything stock until I have enough for a tuning device. I really don't want to end up like this guy!

Street racing FTL there LOL. Sucks to be him and that was a funky sound too, kinda like crumpling foil up. Here's the second part to that vid BTW

Anyway just do research on the different tuning devices/programs out there before you make a decision. Some are better than others. Jackyl+Ostrich, DS-Map, ECMLink (tuning & logger), burn your own chips, AEM EMS+, SAFC (not good for anything over 750cc injectors and has no logger). There is a lot out there and a lot of information on here as well about them good luck with it.
