getting my '95 talon awd inspected in NJ

I've got a question about getting my '95 Talon through NJ inspection.

I know my car is OBDII, but since it's a '95 will they still hook it up to the computer? Or will I only have to pass the sniffer?

They will scan the barcode on the dr. side door sill and if their computer says its obd2 compliant then they will scan it, if not they will sniff it.

Either way, if the CEL is on, they will fail the car.

If the CEL is on, the car will fail and if it has no catalytic converter it will fail. NJ no longer does the safety inspection so all you need to do is pass smog.

Just recently had mine done, like said above there is no longer a safety check. They only check three things.

They have a camera that checks to make sure you have a catalytic converter, they hook you up and scan your computer if your OBDII, and lastly they check the gas cap.

Almost seems irresponsible that NJ does not safety inspection, but they are so concerned about emissions, its definitely interesting.

I really just want to know if they'll hook me up and scan me since i'm obdII but a '95 year model. I heard that even if you have obdII, they don't scan '95s. Only '96 model year and up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since most cars were not obdII compatible in 1995 or earlier, they decided to make it mandatory in 1996 and newer.

I have a better chance of passing if that's the case because I'll only be getting the sniffer.

95 is not really obd2 certified as it may have obd2 connecter the emissions systems are (depending on state) still considered cars that must be sniffed. I have passed with all my cars without cat and many mods. Make sure it's running good and maintenance is good you should pass.

Most places with actual emission tests do physical checks of a catalytic converter.

Ya most places probably due just not here is oregon or washington state I have never been checked nor have any of my friends for visual inspection.

I also ave a 95 eclipse. You will not fail because of a check engine light, but they will run the test to check your emissions. If you have a check engine light for something that will cause your emissions to be out of spec then you will fail. Otherwise if its a CEl for something stupid youre fine.
