the crank is at TDC...the dowels used to point straight up and the marks would line up...drove it hard last night and heres the result....it runs like ass and the timing is a few degrees advanced and i cant bring it back any further

Looks like it could be off by a tooth at most. Why don't you line it up straight first, then check across the camshaft centerlines with a straightedge to see if your marks are in line as well?

Both Dowels appear to be a little off from Straight up (right where the Cams like to "rest") so I concur it may only be 1 tooth off - It's POSSIBLE - particularly if you have "pre-dinged" Pistons from former collisions that you could luck out here - Good Luck & let us know or try & keep it in one Thread...

i just set the dowels straight up...it looks like the exhaust cam is one tooth off but the tdc mark is about 20-25 degress advanced OMG i know the timing belt had snapped on this engine before cuz this is the second head thats been on it and its a 91 block which i pulled out of a 90...i dont know if it snapped with this block in or not...with the crank being that far off its a good possibility the head is toast right?

Sorry dude - IMO it's toast with the Crank to Cams off that far... :thumbdown

160,000 miles on this motor roughly...compression 85,90,100,105 low but not far off from one another....bad rings or still could have bent valves? if the valves were shot wouldnt it be quite a bit lower?

nice fingernail. :|

i have found that if you advance the exhaust cam one tooth while putting the belt on, when the tensioner is released, you will be right on. *shrugs*.

either way, fix it. if that exhaust cam was one tooth retarded, id be all for telling you to go drive it.

Wow your compression numbers are very low... If you are useing the Stock Head gasket and stock internals you should be over 125 PSI on your compression tests... 165 PSI is a fresh new motor's compression... I think you are getting a lot of blow by and it's fouling your plugs out like that... I personally would foot for at least a rebuilt with 2G pistons to be safe for running high boost...

Glad to hear this! - Now what was the deal with the crank 25 degrees off - bad angle or something?
LOL no its still off  i dont really know why its running to be honest....sometime soon ill probably pull the belt off and re-time it all...i have my cas turned as far as it can go and my mark is still advanced...it still pulls hard as hell and seems to run great.....im gonna do some logs tonight to check my knock and fuel trims though...something will have to be done with my compression...i used 2 different gauges and one showed lower yet...with #1 at 51 and #4 at 83

The crank can be off up to 90 degrees ATDC, since this is when all cylinders are even in the bores with pistons 2 & 4 on the way up to TDC. Now, your compression is really low because valves are open (timing off) when they should be closed. Re-do the timing belt job and do another compression test to verifiy that everything is still good.

Good luck!!

i believe that it is every 6 turns when everything lines up. It can be a reason why everything seems so far apart. As per the cams intself, just seems to be off a tooth or so.

Yeah, I think it may be 3 turns when they line up, but I cant remember for sure so It might be 6.

Uhhhh - are you 2 talking about Balance Shafts? - Check his profile - he did the BSE.

I did the BS elim too. And my crank, oilpump, and cam sprockets dont line up on every revolution. Its every 3 I think it was.

Oh didn't think about the valves being so far out of alignment causing the very low compression..... I would pull the front cover and check all the timing marks.... I had my Crank off by like 3 teeth and it ran like total crap... (Why I got a Good deal on the car)...

ill rotate it this week and check it out..if its still out ill redo the timing belt..its just strange to me if it is off cuz itll still bark all 4 tires  i guess we'll see, thanks for your help guys, ill let you know what happens :)

It's every 2 crank rotations, because the cams spin at half the crank speed.

However, that means that if you're a crank rotation out of phase, the dowel pins on the cam gears will be pointed down.

Since he's close to TDC on the crank, and the pins are pointing up, he's at the right place to check it.

Re-do the timing belt job, now. Don't try to troubleshoot anything else until you do. SOMETHING is definately out of time, and that is the only way to fix whatever it is.

So i got the timing belt on back to where it should be and now the car runs like ass....it ran fine before i pulled in the garage and dicked with it.....its missing REALLY bad and no matter how far advanced or retarded i make it, it still misses....all plugs are good, getting fuel, getting spark   like i said...it ran fine and now it doesnt :thumbdown

Can't really help you Devil but just to clear up...

Starting at TDC with everything lined up, every two rotations the cams line up with the crank but the oil pump is off. Every three rotations the oil pump lines up with the crank, but the cams are 180 from where they should be. So six total rotations to bring everything around to lining up perfectly.

I just rebuilt everything so I have this down pretty good...haha
