Gas prices are mainly causing the recession?

It is my opinion that the main problem with our economy and that it is the driving force at our approaching an economic recession is the rising cost of fuel. I am not bitching because I have a hayburning DSM ride. I don't drive it that much since times have gotten tight.

I don't like to talk politics or point finger whatsoever, however I am pissed and something has got to be done before we are off the road do to gas and not the typical DSM breakdown or failure. I don't know about any of you but being able to here the dump pipe and smell race gas is a freedom I am not willing to give up and worth dieing for!

I have to say that our weak government officials of BOTH parties don't care a rats A$$ about us. Our 2 party system is failing us and there is no light at the end of the tunnel as far as current or future representation is concerned! I hate this topic but it has to be addressed before it is to late.

I know and known (RIP) people that work at the refineries in Martinez, CA and it is funny how the Shell refinery fills the gas trucks for every competing gas station in the area. There is no such thing as brand except when they mix the blend as it goes in the truck for each brand station. I personally don't have proof of this just what I was told by my friends who work there.

I am just wondering how the rest of you feel about it and if we are heading or are already head first into a recession?

And we were worried about Y2K!

Hate to say it, but anyone who didn't see this coming when chose to elect an oil tycoon and a former employee of Halliburton into office has no room to complain about rising energy costs. They're supporting big business, which is essentially themselves. And I know this thread won't end until someone stands forward and says "Yeah, well Bush is just looking bad because of what Clinton screwed up..." and that may be true; but you can't argue with the fact that he's had 8 years to fix things and he's only made them worse.

The problem is that it's just been too long without a trustworty & realistic democracy keeping us in control....and neither Hillary or Obama are the answer this term. Our country is in for a major letdown in the coming election no matter who's chosen from what party.

Bush is an asshole and spending all the government funds in invading another country just so the greedy capitalist pigs can get richer while the poor gets poorer. They say OK so the Federal reserve bank system lends the money to congress which then sends to the defense dept which then gives to BG and MS. This is why the money is so inflated. Our tax dollars only go to pay off the interest on the so called deficit which goes to the federal reserve bank via the world bank lenders (rothchilds family and other family network of banks). The world banks exist primarily in England & Germany not in the US. The Federal Reserve is not a Governmet entity but a private institution. If you didn't know this then don't beleive me look it up for yourself. I am telling you all this so you quit pointing fingers about who to blame as it is not that simple. When we getting over blaming everyone then we can unite together and solve this problem. It starts with money and how we honor it and as long as you can buy your way into power we can never have a democracy. Thank the FSM in the sky that I have a company gas card and fill my tanks with that.

Not that it would really hurt me to fill my own tank, I use about $15 a week in gas. The gas prices are getting to be insane, they shoot up 15-20 cents a gallon here in a couple weeks and drop about 10 cents in a month. I am currently paying anywhere between $3.30-$3.70 a gallon for premium in So Cal. Sometimes I can find it a little cheaper.

Yes, I saw Ron Paul yesterday in Carson City. He is what you say but the problem once again it this 2 party system. He has a lot of actually correct ideas that everyone else regards as radical. The Republicans won't back him and he is only a Republican so he can get a some what fair shake in the debaing forumn since they will not let any of the third parties in. He is really a Libertarian which is closer to being what Jefferson was not like some of the idiots whom have hijacked the party to spread their nonsence. Ironically the Democratic Party which is the oldest party NOT the GOP was founded by Jefferson as the Democratic-Republican which opposed the Federalists which are more like the Democratic Party of today. The Federalists were founded by Alexander Hamilton and wanted a fiscally sound and strong nationalistic government where Jefferson was just the opposite. He wanted a small governement that was empowered by the people. The GOP was founded by Lincoln and abolitionists as a morale party to end slavery. More irony huh. Both parties have gone through extensive face lifts since then and have truned coat several times. What we are evolving into is a one party system with the good cop bad cop scenario.

Bottom line is Ron Paul cannot compete because he has no favor within the party and lets face it we are sheep easily led by the boob tube and are to lazy to find out for ourselves and do anything about it. I just wanted to throw this out here so we quit blaming the people we elect and start blaming ourselves for allowing this system to get this bad. I used gas as an excuse because it is the most important thing to our cars as a forumn and perhaps our survival as a free nation. I am sorry for being so blunt but we are all too blame all of us lazy sound Americans. You want to do something start by not accepting this system anylonger and form some sort of cival leadership and inform everyone of the truth or we will be slaves of this system with no modded cars or any car for that matter. Before I get into details, let's not let this be about who's in office.

I personally do not believe your theory of gas causing a recession in the country, even though food and gas prices have stayed fairly high. I would say we might see a recession because of the declining housing market, lack of people spending money and job losses. Also let's not forget the dollar is getting weaker which will cause inflation ($1.488 / 1 euro). When dollar decreases the costs of imports rises.
The Federal Reserve is actually in control here and can change things. By them adjusting interest rates, the demand for assets could either be increased or decreased, therefore stimulating greater production capabilities & demand. So if the Fed lowers interest rates to boost the economy it could cause the dollar to decrease in value more. But if the Fed raised interest rates to curb inflation the economy could suffer.
The reason for gas prices differing from station to station despite coming from the same port or ship is because gas is a commodity that can be traded. The price is fluid, thus is always changing. Our government has subsidized the price of our gas for some time now. And actually closed at $94.20/barrel last I checked. It's been pounded into my head, but gas and other commodities aren't the biggest factor of inflation. It's cost of labor, which is you and me. Labor is a companies #1 most expensive thing.

Oh if you are worried about gas prices. Imagine how much you pay for a bottled water. Now add it up to where the price would be if you had a gallon of Dasani.

About spending money going to war in Iraq. It helped boost the economy. It created jobs across the board. Jobs are good, it stimulates the economy. Everything from jobs in the armed forces, to jobs at manufacturing plants, to steel mills, jobs were created. It wasn't wasting money, but also explain how Britain, Germany, Japan and Italy, were helped out after the war. It was America who gave them billions of dollars and just forgave other billions in debts. But none of those countries are paying interest on their debts. So explain... America seemed to have wasted a lot of money there boosting their economies in those other countries, but I don't see anyone talking about that.

Yes I am not really pissed at him just the system and the ignorance out there. I write letters to the senators and congressmen whom represent me as well as the president and the secretary of the interior etc with no reply nothing about the prices of gas and prescription drugs. I feel like I am an ant trying to drop a trilion pound gorilla. I know there is a way but how or if no cares then why? I know I can take care of myself. I have run a lawn mower on alcohol that I made from the clippings on the grass along with other green stuff so I don't want to hear it. If more people act then something might get done but it starts with communication and education.

I am old enough to remember when I had a 73 blazer with a 30 gallon tank that ran on oh yes leaded fuel that I bought at any service station. Lets see when I was in High school they were worried about it being a $1 gallon. What a joke that is today! I think I paid like $20 for a tank. I worked at service station so I got a better deal and was making like $4.50 an hour doing oil chages and pumping cars since it was a full service station. What's that a full service station where a high School kid pumped gas in California!

I think that the yonger folks out there have been so conditioned to go with the flow that they don't know what's like to have freedom. When I graduated from high school they banned the ability to legally convert and register fully automatic machine guns. Machine guns are still legal to own and shoot depending on which state you live in however you need to have a lot of money to own one. This is the elite taking over. Whether you like them or not the right to bear arms is 2 amendmant right not for just the rich but anyone who is capable to bear them. There is a important reason for this and when they disarm the law abiding citizen then we are screwed. Then the cars will be next look at europe. I have traveled to China and Europe and know a few Europeans here and if it is great over there then why do they want to be here. Everyone answer because they have know freedom over there. The world hates us because of our freedoms. It creeates civil unrest in other countries especially where there are dictators and they see our standard of life. The press in this country is polically fasionable instaed of being correct or truly providing correct factual information. I was watching Walter Cronkite and he was the last to give us anything close to being unswayed. Oil is what the world economy is made of. We would not be doing squat with out it like cutting timber and building houses so I don't buy into the housing issue completely. Greed is strangling us and we need to figure a way out of it with out changing our endeavors.

In my opinion, only one answer to the problem US is having right now. DEBT! Back in 1992 banks changed there strategy and loosned up the restrictions to allow people to gain more credit. Problem started back then and its all showing now. When you start giving people houses with ZERO down payment, something is wrong and banks just didn't see it. They kept giving credit and people kept spending. To top things of, you have a goverment who loves spending money on the army and national secuirty, not that there is anything wrong with that, but comon, there is a limit. You don't put yourself in 9 trillion dollar debt because of a war you are not even winning! Moreover, now people can't pay back what they owe and then you have people filing for bankruptcy.

The entire economic system in not in balance. First thing they teach if you ever take accounting, is assets and liabilities and thats exactly where you go wrong. They teach you to keep your books in balance with you liabilites and assets but the fact is, a person should never HAVE ANY LIABILITIES PERIOD!!! Work hard to earn a dollar and then spend. The system encouraged spending first and then paying but they gave to much to spend. Now, we are here, country is in trillion dollar debt and the entire economy is going down.

Oh and about the gas prices, its all politics in my opinion. Believe or NOT, there is enough oil but to many greedy people selling it, thats all.

He's been driving almost 40 years; and sadly enough, as he's nearing retirement, he's making less profit now than he was in 1980 when I was born. He's dealing with diesel costing $3.69/gal, more expensive truck parts, more expensive living costs....and he's making 20 cents more per mile than he was in 1980. Groceries are expensive, home heating costs are downright scary, let's not even talk about what he pays for health care every month.

It's a catch 22 situation....he can't strike and demand a better rate per mile because some other company will come in and take the freight. He can't haul it for much less than he's making now or he'll be LOSING money by driving. He can't sit at home because there are bills to pay.....so what would you do if you were in his shoes?

...yet another fine example of the government slowly eliminating the middle class.

But I don't see the connection where your morning commute costs a corporation money. The cost of labor matters most to a corporation than commodity prices. So to a person gas prices may hit them the hardest or bottled water which ever you use more of. But to a corporation it is the labor

Lets not forget the gulf war funding US provided. I mean you could look at countless examples of how Bush has used the money up. When a countries NUMBER ONE EXPORT IS WEAPONS, something is WRONG!

Oh and another point a little of topic, all the companies that were created by the US and a person can name alot of them are practically owned by foreign countries business men because the amount of investment they have within those companies will be enough to buy the company itself. When banks themselves don't have enough money but have to borrow it from other countries, something is really wrong!

Honestly, whoever gets voted into office, good luck figuring out this mess because a lot of economists have said, "There seems to be no fix!"

It is saying that the price is only going to get worse and if you are like you're dad with a truck that is designed to a million miles + you might as well buy a new one because you won't get the fuel economy.

You practically hit the nail on the head. He's driving a 1992 Freightliner with 960k on it....almost a million miles. The Cat engine is pretty darn efficient given it's age....he averages 6.2-6.8 MPG when loaded.

The funny thing about all this is that if he were to somehow be able to afford the $150k price tag of a new truck, it would actually get WORSE fuel mileage than his old truck does because of the extensive emission control equipment and catalytic converters on trucks these days.

It's just sad to see someone who's worked so hard all of his life not being able to afford to retire and enjoy his golden years.

Stop the Tax Cut and Budget Cuts, Shut Down the Federal Reserve and those assholes, No more loans to ill-deserving people, no more credit handouts, no more big businesses selling out to other cheap labor countries, no letting people in over our borders, no more fighting a war that costs WAY TOO MUCH!!

Slow down, think about the problems America has before we think about others. I think humility is good and helping other countries is good, but how much do we have to give to the aids infested nations of Africa, or poor slums of south Asia, or trying to fix a 2000 year old problem that will never go away, before we realize that AMERICA HAS MORE PROBLEMS. AMERICA SPENDS BILLIONS FOR OTHER COUNTRIES. WHEN OTHER COUNTRIES SUPPORT AFRICA AND ASIA AND THE MIDDLE EAST AS MUCH AS WE HAVE, MAYBE AMERICA WILL TOO!!!!!!! Maybe that will help our trillion dollar deficit a little. OH wait, i guess i shouldn't have said that, that might hurt somebodies feelings. Fu^K feelings, do what is right.

The funny thing about all this is that if he were to somehow be able to afford the $150k price tag of a new truck, it would actually get WORSE fuel mileage than his old truck does because of the extensive emission control equipment and catalytic converters on trucks these days

I was talking to my dad about the same thing. The damn emissions cause the engine not to run as effiently causing it to consume more fuel. It is a game and we are the ponds and they think that we will continue until enough people cry about it for a while and then they back the price down like they are doing us a favor then boom! The price goes up even higher than the last time. It is goes up then down then up higher than it was then they charge what everyone was crying about but that's ok now because everyone is happy it isn't higher than the original peak it is called conditioning.

Good post and no don't be afraid to hurt anyone's fellings here! Say it how you feel! I am sick of this crap about having to be polite over be truthful. The truth is not always easy to swallow but it makes one much bigger than being polite. I gave up allowing people to try and correct me when I am being truthful about things. It doesn't always make friends but who needs friends like that!
