My friend just bought an 95GSX and when I sat in it I've noticed that his gas pedal can barely be moved. It moves only about 1-3cm or so and doesn't go all the way in. What can be the problem?

Probably there is either a malfunction in the pedal assembly or, my guess, is that there is some obstruction at the throttle body. I have had issues with my throttle cable becoming un-attached from my TB, which would cause the pedal to move only about an inch, but the throttle was almost to the floor. A friend of mine had his alarm siren get caught in the path of where the throttle cable connects to the throttle body, and it made the throttle near impossible to move. Just go ahead and check if you can move the throttle by hand at the throttle body. If you can't and there is nothing obstructing it's path, take off the the throttle body and figure out whats wrong with it.

Can this also be a sign of a bad tranny or does it have nothing to do with the tranny itself?

It has nothing to do with the tranny, like said above, there is probably something in the way of the throttle cable or something wrong with the assembly itself.

This was the same with my gsx when I first got it. All I did was get rid of the cruise control cable in the box with the throttle cable, and I sprayed some lube in there aswell. Im not a big fan of cruise control anyway so it was an easy fix for me. But my pedal didn't have tons of resistence, just had enough to bother me. Getting rid of the cruise just made it lighter to press.

the problem with my friend's gsx is that the gas pedal will only move about 1cm no matter how hard you press it, it doesn't go any further. :|

I had this problem when I put my throttle body back on one time after changing some gaskets. The little wheel that the cable goes around on the TB shaft, well if you don't remember to wrap it around that track in the wheel it tends to makes the pedal stiff. Try and see if that is the problem
