Gas light.

So ive decided to run my gas down to see if I have a gas light. And I guess I do! But what it does. It comes on for like a min. And then goes off for a minute and goes back on. Is that what they do? Or what?

I read and asked some questions and did some tests for myself. I asked mechanic that works for Mitsubishi and others they say its supposed do what you describe. If you pay attention to the light it will go on then fade off. It would go on again after 2 minutes or so then it will come on. It will continue to do this until the light just stays on that's when you have around half a gallon. I have a problem with my fuel gauge though that doesn't work just my gas light. Lol risky I know right any ideas on that?

I think these are mechanic gauges. Take out your cluster and see if you can replace it or not.

I think that's just the way the sending unit is designed. Mechanical float is my guess.

When I went through my broke stage in life (ohh college! haha) I got pretty used to that light. I never ran her out of gas, but when that light stops going out during braking, its time to scrape some gas money together!

Haha its funny that this thread popped up because I saw my gas light come on for the very first time today. It did exactly what you described. It came on and then it faded away. I was also wondering if it was supposed to do that, but now I know! And my needle was WAY low. It was like a 1/4 tank below empty .

Wow in 13+ years of owning my 2g GS-T i've never seen a gas light. I converted it to stand alone at 24k miles but the full cluster still works except the check engine light so maybe mine is disabled? anyone know on what ity's tied to? Stock ECU or fuel sender unit?

Same thing mine does the way you described.

The gauge has never been accurate on any of the DSM's I have owned.

My gauge hits the bottom empty line by like the 200 mile mark, and it stays on the empty line for maybe another 50-75 miles before I have to fuel up and have that first light come on. I have gotten pretty used to keeping an eye for when it is about to come on then just fuel up..

Haven't tested the amount I'd get on the highway but city, Approx...250ish miles out of my tank..

The low fuel level light is not dependent on the ECU.

The float in the tank is a variable resistor that changes with the float level. A method for setting your fuel gauge to be accurate when empty: install a variable resistor inline between the sending unit wire and the cluster, and with the tank empty, adjust the car. resistor (potentiometer) so that the needle is dead center on the "E" mark.
