Gas gauge not working

So this is the only problem left on my winter beater that has turned into my daily driver. Gas gauge has'nt worked since I got the car. idiot light still works but the gauge itself just sits at E 24/7 Checked the voltage at the pump for the sending wire and it is a variable voltage so power is making it from there but at the pin for the fuel gauge on the dash I have 0 volts.

Does the voltage from the sender go directly to the gas gauge motor or does it go thru something else and get some sort of other signal.

Any other ideas other than to run a wire from the sender back by the pump up to the gauges? I tried to find a wiring diagram but chiltons is worthless as usual.

Would'nt be getting variable voltage on the signal wire if it was the float.....

Well If it sits on E all the time then the gauge has no power to it, which you have figured out, but what i would do is try to trace the wire down in the harness first, and if you can not find it broken or something anywhere, then run a wire from your variable volt source on the sending unit all the way to the pin on the gauge, and that should take care of the problem

Thats my plan but I wanted to make sure that the wire was going directly there, don't want to sent the gauge 5 volts if it operates off a variable lower voltage.

Interestingly I've read tons of posts of people saying that to replace the motor you have to un-solder it from the board......it's screwed on with 3 little philips screws.
