FWD & AWD (6 bolt) Oil Pans same or different?

Just finishing up my 6bolt swap and my downpipe (STOCK, until the car gets inspected) is touching the oil pan. I guess that brings me to wonder is there a difference between the 6bolt FWD and AWD oil pans? I have come across quite a few 6bolt fwd and awd cars and never noticed a difference. I will replace the stocker once the cars through insp but with most all the aftermarket downpipes now replacing the cat the car is never going to pass. Thanks!

There are some pictures on that link, check them out.

Top is an early 6bolt oilpan, bottom is a late 7bolt oilpan. There are 2 key differences between them:

Note that the early oilpan flange is flat in the middle where circled (right under the crank sprocket). The late oilpan drops down in that area.
Note the early oilpan side bumps out towards you in the circled area, the late pan bumps in.


Here's a better view of the late oilpan and the flange where it drops down under the crank sprocket.

Here's where you can check it with the car on the ground. Just slide your hand between the oilpan and frame in the circled area, run your hand up to the oilpan flange under the crank sprocket, and see if the oilpan bumps out towards the driver's side or in towards the passenger side. Out = early, in = late block.


Thanks to Mike at RRE for the oilpan flange info. As we were discussing it, I noticed the differences in the side of the oilpan, which is easier to check, as you don't even have to see it to check it.

no its ok... I know the differences between the 7 bolt and 6 bolt BUT the issue is FWD vs AWD. I really feel that its the same considering ive have my hands on uncountable of both cars in my time working at a dsm shop and all but ive never seen a difference. I think im going to call the dealership on this one.

Just called it in to mitsubishi, both are the same

BOTH for a 6 bolt turbo are MD156465

hmmm no as to why my DP is touching my pan id love to know!

ya motors in AWD or FWD are exactly the same. Your DP might me rubbing because the FWD and AWD DP are different...

Correct, but my DP is stock and is what belongs on the car.

is it rubbing on the sides of the pan or the top? do you know which oil pan is on there?? did the previous owner maybe put a different pan on there??
