FWD: 13's finally

If you get a chance you should try some 225/55/16 tires at 20 psi of pressure... they're big I know, bit they fit with no issues, and they give you less hop, and a bit more grip. if you do a little research you'll see that some FWD guys have had good results with these size of tires. Heck... any brand will do, just with decent tread on them, pick up a used set from you're 'used tire shop' and try them if they deliver good results, then invest on a nice set. if not, well you didn't lose much, around here a used tire runs around $25 installed so figure $50 bucks.

I use to be a good Khumo fan, sure you can't beat the price, and quality is good, but for racing purposes they happen to have harder sidewall, wich prevents from giving you the desire flex you need for better grip at launch, thus more undesired spinning and more hop. I know azenis, dunlops, bfgoodrichs are better and whatnot, but not everybody has the money right away to get a set of tires just to run to the track.

When I was bone stock I managed to get a 1/8 mile slip of 9.7@70mph and 2.0 60ft with 205/50/16 @20 psi of tire pressure, treadless bfgoodrichs and mad wheel hop, I havent been to the track since I put more stuff to the car plus 1/4 mile track is far away from me, but in a way I don't want to because I don't have traction even at 11 psi of boost on my ported 14b, so im waiting on a nice set of radials, and decent axles, since mine are clicking right know, so that'll have to wait. It'll suck if I go to the track and don't get good times or break an axle don't you think... haha.

But again... You did good, and good luck maxing out your 14b, follow advice from other tuners, and maybe you'll be another tuner to hit high 12's on a 14b powered FWD...! sounds cool huh? well its not imposible.

Sorry, I don't know what I was writing before..

Yes, you definitely want to ADD fuel when you are knocking...Im assuming it's not Rich Knock you are seeing since you don't have many fuel mods, so if you got an SAFC and added some fuel where the logger shows the timing drop and knock count rise, your timing should increase and keep on rising and you should be golden! You could easily gain a few tenths if properly tuned...Then after it's tuned for no knock at 17psi, turn up the boost a little higher and low 13's on a fwd 14b! Impressive

congrats man its good to see those times

my current 1990 laser went a 12.75 @ 109 on a 14b, ported out ofcourse, at 19 psi race gas, full exhuast, upper i/c pipe with blow thru, 550s, 190 pump and suspension mods....and a 2.0 60' time on 104 octane turbo blue so it spossiably for you to get into the 12's it just takes a good timing advance and a killer launch

lets see another 12!

pretty good. A local guy here got a 12.9 on a 1g fwd that had a fuel pump, downpipe, and a boost controller
I got lucky. The sixty foot times really helped. Unfortunately, 12's won't come for a long, long time. I just don't have the power to get there yet. I figure I have to trap above 110 to have a chance on street tires. And with more power, those sixty foots are only going to get worse.
A laggier turbo makes launching a FWD much easier. I also like having a 3 step. It makes consistent launches a snap and slamming gears easy. I've cut high 2.0's on all seasons with my 50 trim. The real trick however is getting some momentum in second gear. Its easy to fry the hell out of the tires when shifting to quickly. You have to be calm and gentle when applying the power again after a shift. You also need a good clutch. I come off the stutter box at 4500 and when the car starts rolling I'm around 5500 rpm's slipping the clutch.

I supposed a laggier turbo could be easier to launch. I would just be afraid when it hits boost in first gear. You're right though, you would definitely need some patience in between shifts.

I never plan on a 50 trim however. Maybe a EVO 16G at the very biggest. This thing is my daily driver. As much fun as it is to pull at high rpm, I like the feeling of low end torque (not that a 14b powered car is any kind of torque monster, but you get the idea). I'll never forget my first ride in a 5.0 Stang when I was 15, ahh, low end torque.

I want to thank all you FWD guys for being so inspirational. My daily driver is a 90 Laser with some good mods, but mostly it's mellow enough for daily commuting. I haven't taken it to the track in a long, long time. Until tonight! :) My best time was 13.99, best speed was 107.6 mph. This was on stock size tires at 32 psi and 91 octane (and a bunch of mods). Essentially I raced it setup the same way as I drive it on the street. Not bad for a car that gets over 30 MPG when driven nicely. I'm sure I coud push it much faster with racegas and some big, sticky tires, but that's what my Talon is for.

I also REALLY like how racing helps me focus on the tuning. It's this reason alone I recomend that everyone go to the track at least once a year. It's a great way to dial in the car and shake out the bugs. I got to the track with the boost set to 16 psi. After logging each run and making adjustments I finished the night at 18 psi. The drive home was very enjoyable with the newfound power!

My 50 trim car is my fair weather daily driver and its got torque, just up high LOL. My 14b messy weather car has less torque, and its placed much lower in the powerband. Mustang torque in a 4 cyl is hard to come by.

It must be nice to have a daily driver that traps 125 mph.

pneumo, nice run. What's all done to it? I used to always race my car with a street set up too. Just got tired of not hitting 13s, so I had to cheat a little with the race gas :)

Its fun messing with the 600cc sportbikes. Nobody takes it seriously until its too late and they realized that they should have dropped to second insead of third at 80mph.

I like racegas, too. I was tempted to throw in a few gallons of 100 unleaded last night and see what it'll do, but I already had trouble keeping the right front tire hooked up in second gear. More power would've just spun that tire even more, just like the modded Supra I went up against- he smoked the tires all the way through first and second gear. I actually beat him to the 1/8th, but then he flew past me and trapped at 119mph!

Basically my 90 Laser has an EVO16G, EVO O2 housing, 2G ex man, 2.5" DP and cat, 3" catback, 2G MAF, small FMIC, Denso 660's, EPROM ECU, about 100 pounds of rear interior removed, and some little stuff. It also has the original 1990 cams, which are suppose to be the worst, but I found out they give the best low end power compared to the other years. It's not quite V8 torque, but in a lightweight FWD car with a small turbo, it's close.
