My current car right now is a 98 Rs, its been my DD for the last 2 years. Its my first DSM/car in general LOL. And if I wasn't rushing and actually did research I wouldn't be in this situation, but anyways. I'm starting my furst engine rebuild project, my goal is to get 4-500hp. I don't have the car yet but imma start the rebuild first then get a TSI or GsX shell in the summer. I have allot of questions so please bare with me, we all gotta start somewhere.

I don't really know too much about turbo models, can someone please explain the differences between 6 bolt & 7 bolt?

What are some decent websites for parts?

What pistons rods cams/shafts valves etc. should I go with?

What pulleys? I do want to want to keep power steering, and the a/c.

What kind of intake mani and throttle body?

I know there's plenty more questions I have but can't think of any at the moment. I have a 4-6k budget for just the motor. I appreciate any help that is given.

So with my next check I'm goin to harbor freight to get my engine stand, and start posting WTB threads for a head and block.

A lot of those questions could be answered by searching this site. You also need to have a specific goal for your car. Is it going to be drag? auto-x? street? Also included in your goal should be how much power you plan on making.

The main difference between a 6 bolt and 7 bolt is the amount of bolts that hold the flywheel. The 6 bolt is supposedly better than the 7 bolt in that it has beefier rods, bigger intake ports, and is "less likely to crankwalk."

My vendor preference is extremePSI. Others that I've used are DSM graveyard, Street Tuned Motorsports, JNZtuning, and FFWD. Just check out the supporting vendors page on here.

Your third question would better be answered once you tell us more about what your goals for the car are.

Stay with the stock pulleys. The only pulley that I changed is the crank pulley/harmonic balancer. I changed that out for a Fluidampr. Underdrive pulleys are not recommended because of electrical issues with the alternator (not enough current with the underdrive pulley).

As for the intake manifold and throttle body, I'd stick with stock. I've seen many upgrade their intake manifold to Magnus's SMIM (sheet metal intake manifold). The SMIM is a great upgrade but I plan on keeping the stock cast manifold for a while.

6bolt has 6 bolts on the flywheel. Known to be stronger motors. Ease of mind about crankwalk.

This is my dream set up:

6bolt block, Balance shaft elimination, Eagle rods, manley pistons 9:1,

2g Head: nice set of springs and retainers, kelford cams, 1mm over sized valves, ported ect

magnus intake mani with either a 1g tb or a boomba tb.

plus youll need intercooler, fuel, turbo. theres alot you need my man

Ive had good luck with extremepsi, slowboyracing, forced performance, and stm.

Plus 1 on graveyard and extreme psi. great places to buy from. on a personal note i'd stay away from slowboy .the stock balancer works great as long as the rubber is in good shape. thats just my 02 cents

To be honest with you I would get the car first than start the build. This way you can plan the build. It's also not just building an engine, what about the tranny, the brakes, the steering. All components relay on each other. Also whats your background limited mechanical background or more experianced that will make a big differance in how you put your build together. Most people start spending money before they plan out their builds only to realize they bought the wrong parts only to sell parts at a loss. Plan with a pencil and paper first research everything than buy. Thats not to say you can't upgrade parts as you go along as you build you will be able to make more informed purchases. Good luck to you.

My goal is to get about 4-500hp, on a street tuned DD. Time is not really an issue because I currently have a DD but I wanna finish around this time next year.

I want to at least get a lil start on the engine since I don't have a garage to store the car. Once I get the head and block done then ill get the shell and work from there. The engine stands gonna be in my room. And I have some mechanical background but not to much with engines. But that's why I'm doin my research now.

Instead of telling you specifically what parts to get, take a look at this first. Almost everyone on this site does/did and guides them to their "dream DSM." If you have further questions, and I'm sure you already know this, search before you make a new thread.

Yeah I have that page bookmarked actually but for what I'm trying to do right now it doesnt really help. I just need help with straight internal work.
